This one aimed at JR really, but if anyone knows...
Where do you stand if you''re overtaking and you''re breaking the speed limit?
For example say you''re stuck behind a car and a couple of lorries doing 55 mph. You look ahead and the road is all clear, the granny in front has no intention of overtaking , you''re in a bloody fast sports car, so you know you can easy overtake all 3. You don''t want to hang about on the wrong side of the road, so you floor it, by the time you''ve passed the last lorry you going 90 mph after which you brake back to 60ish.
What would happen if you where clocked at 90?

I do agree on one part of this that an o/t should be done quickly. However, the road ahead should also be clear and you should have plenty of time to get back to your side so basting past at 90 is going to be difficult to justify. As a general rule when I do get out to do any speeders I would get several checks on a vehicle doing an O/t and providing it slowed down after I would not pull it. It does also depend on the speed of the vehicle being overtaken as well. Just a point when I write up my evidence I always include in it any O/T's.
JR's comment sums up all that is wrong with 'Cameras - they cannot apply the discretion that is ESSENTIAL to the credibility of any law enforcement (my job involves enforcement of H&S Law, so I am very aware of the use & bounds of discretion). Or do those checking the Gatso photos have the ability to apply discretion (or has it been civilianised?).
Out & about this weekend seeing plenty of people towing caravans off on their jollys.
Saw a fair few breaking their 60mph speed limit on the motorway.
I wish GATSOs could differentiate between cars, towing vehicles & HGVs. As soon as the goverment can fix this they'll be raking it in.

Even if the overtaking scenary described at the top of this thread was possible at 60 mph, would it still not be safer to complete it as quickley as possible? Surely sitting in the wrong lane for 40 seconds at 60mph even on a long straight road, would not be safer than 90mph for 10 seconds (for example - I haven't actually calculated times, but you get the idea!)
As long as the person at the front of the queue has seen you doing 90 mph up his outside when he clearly isn't paying a great deal of attention pootling along, ignoring the miles of traffic behind him and doesn't decide to change cds / answer phone / turn right / etc, if you were doing 60 you'd be able to slow down quicker.
It was just an example really so see where you would stand. I don't think you'd actually bang up to 90 and just tear passed ...
The reason I asked this on the first place is that one of the EVO (magazine) drivers has been banned for a year doing this in the Mit. Evo 6. He was caught doing 90 overtaking a bunch of grannies. Don't know the exact story so can't really comment too much, I'll have to wait until the mag comes out.

Why don't they ask attending officers to report whether or not they think any manoeuvre/situation is actually dangerous, and why? Most of the coppers i meet from the back of T5's seem sensible, well informed; yet their only choice is to nick or not to nick.
I recently received three points and £180 fine for reaching 84 mph during an o/t on the A1 approaching Alnwick from the north. This is one of very few places where visibility is good on this accursed road. A long, uphill stretch; lorries do 45, and the one in front of me and six others was struggling. What was i to do? Balls oot, that's what.
Cameras know only to nick. It's high time we made full use of the expertise we have hiding behind hedges across the country.
