An excellent strong sentence which you would hope will be a deterrent for any gangster running around our cities firing guns as an occupational hazard of being a drug dealer, but sadly I doubt it.

42yrs is a long time before him and his fake teeth get to stand doing selfies in supercar showrooms. Good.

It irks me a little that cowards like this - and that’s what he is, a coward, plain and simple - don’t have the cojones to stand in the dock and face their victims’ families as part of the overall process of justice, but it is his ‘right’ to refuse to appear. Fair enough: we should just vote to change the law, that anyone who refuses to appear is immediately denied parole when eventually entitled to it. All rather academic in this case as he’ll hopefully only be coming out of jail in a wooden box but it might make others reconsider.

Are most people going to want to pay out considrable sums to keep this louse in prison for so long? - it seems so inappropriate.

Most unfortunate if something terrible happened to him while inside.
All that needs to happen is that he crosses the path of maybe someone who is awaiting a decision on release that may well be denied, unstable and might well think "why not" Or perhaps a little less likely that certain individuals decide he cant be trusted not to talk. Either way one less scumbag out of circulation.

Putting emotions aside, how was it a murder charge? Surely murder is intent to kill someone?

And he had intent to kill someone...just not that person. It's called transferred malice.

He did set out to kill someone, definitely pulled the trigger and actually killed someone. Slam-dunk murder. The fact he killed the wrong person makes no difference.

Even if he'd taken the loaded gun to "seriously injure" someone (shoot in leg) and accidentally killed either the intended victim or someone else it would still be murder.

If he'd taken the gun to "scare" someone (wave gun about) and accidentally killed either the intended victim or someone else it might conceivably nudge towards manslaughter but the problem would still be the fact the gun was loaded, so murder would probably stick.

Murder requires an intention to kill or seriously injure *someone*. It doesn't necessarily have to be an intention to kill the person who actually died. This has been the law for at least 450 years.

Righto, makes sense. Let’s hope he has a thoroughly miserable time.

Unfortunately these are just retribution fantasies. He is a well-connected high level gangster who will fare just fine in prison.

.......for killing a child....?

I'm not so sure he'll have a happy, relaxed, time.

Sensible comments on criminals not attending sentencing, and how it's not actually a problem with a nice easy solution.

Is this a new thing? I really don’t understand this either to be honest. He’s been arrested once, already.

Take to the dock by whatever means necessary. Taser, arm and leg cuffs. WTF is the problem?

You’re right, he’ll probably fit in fine.

Well connected maybe but how high level do you think he is? Living in a rented house owned by someone higher up the pecking order and running around trying to off people in the street to pay off a drugs debt doesn’t read as High level, it reads as being in someone else’s pocket.

I would love for a judge to be able to sometimes address the convicts in their own language.Something along the lines of "You're a fking child killing scumbag and you're gonna rot in jail for 42yrs.If I had my way you'd hang. You .Now fk off."

How many other child killers have been killed in prison?

Ian Huntley etc all seem to be alive.

Prison isn't meant to be some barbaric free-for-all, revenge-fest in a civilised society.
Why have you brought up being killed in prison ?

I'm sure there are others in there far more capable at doing whatever they feel is most appropriate for him. If not now, there's 42 years for others to decide on how he should be treated.

Just a bit on Huntley for you…

“He is currently at HMP Frankland, in Durham, and is at 'constant risk of attack' from other prisoners… While in HMP Wakefield in 2005, Huntley was scalded with boiling water by convicted spree killer Mark Hobson. He had his neck slashed by convicted armed robber Damien Fowkes at HMP Frankland and needed hospital treatment.”

Ian Huntley hasn't got the knowledge of the drug ring in his home town that he can let slip and cause some of the big dogs a serious head ache.

That's why within 24 hours of his guilty verdict there was a 250k bounty on his head.

He's got nothing to lose,42 years inside and alot of info to spread about.

Either way they are taking it very seriously as he's in segregation for his own safety for the foreseeable.

I said earlier in the thread,no one will be off limits to make him keep his mouth shut that ll include his barbie missus and his kids.

She's already apparently moved back to councilville.

Several people who have been involved with that world online have said that bounty is likely to be complete and utter nonsense by the media. It doesn't make sense, even if he did have a bounty, who would pay 250k? No one.
