That is a lovely Sprite. And from the sound of things, I would guess that garage just didn't know how to build an engine. Really basic errors throughout

Great news.

...well, aside from that rather long and occasionally worrying list of items on the last page! wink

She's all sorted now - I now have a properly documented / photographed engine re-build :-)

I paid the crooked, criminal, and unskilled censored to get it back.

It started smoking on the way home and my neighbour kindly offered to "take a look"....and ended up rebuilding the engine top to bottom & the clutch....

If you don't mind me asking, how did it all go down in the end? Did you pay for everthing he billed for? A negotiated amount? Did you see him when you picked it up? Was there anymore discussion with the guy?

Was the something going on with the crank end float or was there more?
Was the oil smoke down to pistons/rings/bore as it wasn't valve guides?

You can (need to smile ) tell me, I'm an engineer suffering from terminal curiosity.

Glad there's a happy ending (oo, er, missus).

You seemed a lot more mellow about it a couple of months ago, is that because you hadn't discovered how badly it had been done?

The report is interesting, it's suprise how much there is to go wrong on such an old engine, but a suppose much of the fundamentals of engines haven't actually changed so much, a lot of the changes are outside. I can see how you could probably get sucked in to thinking rebuilding a 60 year old engine would be far simpler than it really is.

I don't understand the bits that are gunky/full of carbon. If you know relatively little about rebuilding an engine looking at all the bits that are black and making them silver seems fairly obvious.

I suspect the OP is rather more mellow about the whole experience after the incredibly generous help received from his neighbour. Just shows that for every nasty piece of work around, there are still genuinely nice people out there.

Yeah, if you'd had the patience to read the whole thread, I had my moments of anger, denial, depression etc.

How it went down:

I actually stopped chasing the clown, at which point he realised he wouldn't be getting any money....so he sent me the final bill - it was slightly less than my "worse case" estimate, so I just paid it.

I took the neighbour with me to pick up the car and we drove back.

I deliberately didn't get into a debate with the idiot for all the reasons I stated months ago - too old for fisti-cuffs and all that.

But I'm more angry now, as it is clear that not only was there unnecessary delay and x-rated messages, he also bodged the fking job!

I've just driven down there again, and they are still in there doing stuff, so some other poor punter is being ripped off right now.

So he hasn't moved to Canada like he said he was doing then?

Have you the stomach for a small claims procedure? Seems so wrong he gets away with everything, and gets paid.
