So, as been asked a few times now, why on earth did you ditch it?
I use that train 5 or 6 times a year to visit relatives. It was the return trip that was screwed up so I could only have used it after buying another single journey out within the time frame, which I wasn’t necessarily going to do

Don’t see the relevance, I paid for a service and didn’t get it and was out of pocket/inconvenienced as a result

But you could do and if you had the ticket in your possession you can still do. This is where the problem lies. You've claimed you've binned the ticket, but the railway company do not know this.

I'm in no way defending the railway company as I do feel they're being unnecessarily petty, but I do understand why they would like proof of the tickets destruction.

What is the tickets style? Is it one with a bar code / VR code which the conductor scans to "spend" the ticket? If so, you could suggest that they wipe that bar code / VR code from their system so it wont scan?

Yes I have a photo of the ticket...
Pretty sure I've used delay repay for a cancelled train and I just had to upload an image of the relevant ticket.

Yes.. but as I’ve said, I could have used it at any time before I complained, so that term and condition doesn’t make any sense.

Could you not have used it on the other line you took, as the ticket was valid for other routes too?

All trains cancelled the day I wanted to use it.. had to make my own travel arrangements on another line and a bus..

BUT they are saying no because I threw away the paper ticket..

(Thameslink btw). I’m thinking that isn’t a fair or reasonable term and condition, at the end of the day ive paid for a service I didn’t receive. Consumer Rights Act? What reckon? Rail ombudsman?

Yes I have a photo of the ticket edited for clarity

Devil's advocate

How do they know the ticket hasn't been used on another day/train?

The Terms and Conditions absolutely does make sense.

If you had used it before the time you complained then the conductor would have defaced it / punched a hole through it when doing their checks. It's you who now cannot produce an undefaced ticket.

Any other route involves a bus (what I did)

Was it just a bus, or a train and a bus?

But I also notice that the photo shows your 'anytime' return is actually an 'off peak' return.

I've done similar in the past, where I've kept my return leg ticket to use on another return trip the following week...but that's much simpler if you're travelling frequently.

Hilarious.

This is a username I expect to see complaining about more things in life that did not work out as he assumed they would over the coming months.

As in paying for a train that didn’t exist on the specific day I had to use it?

How silly of me

You paid for a ticket that entitled you to a service. You then threw it away.

Yes, very silly of you to throw away the item that is/has ways been required for a refund from train companies.

As I have pointed out to thameslink I have a photo that I could photoshop to be defaced. So I find your logic lacking
