So let’s say I do have the ticket and return it to them now.. how do they know I haven’t used it in the meantime? That’s why their t and c’s are nonsense and probably illegal

  • and if they could check any of those numbers on the ticket to see I haven’t used it, then they can do it off the photo
Make sense?
No, it's why tickets are defaced/written on by inspectors. If it's an e-ticket or barcode ticket it gets scanned and the numbers logged. Have you noticed they don't accept photos of tickets as valid tickets of travel? Hint, it's for the same reason.

But feel free to try argue their T&Cs. RDG is pretty hot on those wink

Easily.

You return the unused paper ticket and the magnetic strip on the back will be read and will show if it’s been through an entry/exit gate or not.

I was a ticket seller monkey about twenty years ago and putting the ticket through a scan thingy would show whether it’s been read/used straight away.

Yes but.. why have they asked me to deface it and send them the picture? Whats the point of that if you need to read the strip??

That doesn't answer the question.

So that the ticket cannot be used after it is refunded.

Is it really this difficult?

A while ago I got a refund for a hugely delayed train, about £150. I just uploaded a picture of my ticket, but the thing was, my ticket was just valid for that day, so obviously the ticket had no further value.

But the OP's ticket does have further value, hence being asked to deface it, so it can't be used again, obviously.

And on the subject of keeping your ticket until you have claimed; for my £150, I happened to be on the same train as my next door neighbour. A while afterwards, I said to her I'd just received a cheque for my refund. Oh, she said, buy my company paid for mine. Well, so did my company, but so what? The ticket is in your hand, the train company just pays the ticket holder, and your company knows nothing about it. Aghh, I'd not though of that, she said, as she went off to find it. Turned out she'd thrown it away.

The moral of this story is to always keep you ticket until you have claimed your refund.

All for £32. The mind boggles.

Chalk it up and stop wasting everyone’s time including yours.

Since it's only the return leg, dont they just refund 50% of it, so £16 ?

Nah, the outward journey was £31, so the return is just £1.

You asked if you could get a refund on an invisible ticket and the answer is no.

Not sure what this easy to abuse the system is all about but you could always have a go and let us know how you get on. After all you have the moral high ground to defend.
If it’s invisible how did I take a picture of it? Riddle me that..
Not hard to take a pic of a friends ticket or a ticket you found.

It’s not much of a riddle!

Typically on these threads.
.As soon as that one single outlier response is received, that one poster will be thanked for their ‘helpful’ input and the other ninety nine responders criticised for having some form of collective bias.

To provide you with a cost effective option rather than sending them the physical ticket. Otherwise this thread will be:
"I'm only getting a refund on the ticket price, but not the postage they demand of me to send the physical ticket in. How can they do this? Why must I spend 50p on a stamp and envelope for their cancelled train?"

Perhaps you could get on your next train really slowly, and if that doesn’t work, just stand in front of the train to stop it.

Or is that only for cars?
