So an all singing dance camera for speeding, seat belt and phone use detection at the same time

https://www.wiltshiretimes.co.uk/news/24138542.dri...

Not wearing seat belt - fined up to £500 plus up to 2 penalty points.
Using a phone while driving - fine of £200 plus 6 penalty points.
Speeding - fixed penalty fine £100 plus 3 penalty points.

Damn, you would nearly be off the road under totting up procedure from a single camera.

The trial in Cornwall back in Aug 2023 had a few 'hits'
"In the first 72 hours of deployment, the system detected 117 mobile phone offences and 180 seat belt offences."

Yes using a phone, no seatbelt, speeding etc is illegal and one death through either is one too many, the annoying thing is for the last god knows how many years all you hear about is camera for this camera for that, gonna clamp down on motorist for this, parking clampdown, charge more for parking, road tax going up because we’re the devil and the main cause of global warming, can’t drive down this road or that road, bus lanes, put obstructions in roads that are dangerous, charge for parking outside your own house, etc etc.
Yet crime is on the up, drug related crime / deaths, stabbing, shootings etc are on the rise. Wouldn’t it be better use of resource and money to concentrate on sorting those issues out as I’m sure there must be more deaths and injuries from that than motorists cause. But as usual we are mostly legit and so a very easy target to make money from.
Watching some of the cop programmes it would be better to drive round on false plates as the penalty for that seems to be less than being caught doing something whilst all legit.

Interesting to read that 1/3rd of people killed in road collisions in 2021 were not wearing a seat belt!

Local governments are skint. Cameras are seen as revenue generators, simple as that. Tackling serious crime doesn't come into it.

Aha! So two-thirds of people killed in road collisions in 2021, were wearing a seat belt?

Get those seat belts off!

A bit of misinformation above.

Not possible to get 2 points or “up to 2 points” for a seatbelt offence. Seatbelt offence is non-endorsable. Fixed penalty £100. If prosecuted then it’s a level 2 offence (up to £500).

Mobile phone is a £200 fixed penalty with 6 points. If prosecuted then level 3 offence (up to £1000) with 6 points or a discretionary disqualification of any length.

Speeding is a £100 fixed penalty with 3 points. However, if prosecuted then level 4 fine for motorway offences (up to £2500). Level 3 fine (up to £1000) for other roads. 3-6 points or a discretionary disqualification of any length.

Indeed, the interesting bit was everything being combined into a single camera, throw in some AI and the risk to your licence from several offences being detected at the same time increases significantly.

I don't condone driving without a seat belt on or using a mobile phone but adding AI means the seat belt and phone are probably just the start of what could be detected using a camera. A clean licence is rapidly becoming an endangered species.

Certainly not that hard to.

Plus, there has probably been plenty of uses tracking crims and successful prosecutions.

Rubbish.

DVLA figures show that about 95% of licence holders have zero penalty points.

I drive through the one on the M4 mentioned in the article every day on the way to work... I wasn't certain what it was so slowed down thankfully.
Given that every day this week I have been the only person doing so, there'll be an awful lot of brown envelopes dropping through doors over the coming weeks I suspect.

A shame the camera can't detect the awful (lack of) lane discipline that I have to deal with every day on that same stretch.

So wear a seatbelt and don't use the phone whilst driving, not sure what the issue is here? Things that we need less off are being tackled.
