In the process sadly the BMW had to slow down quite a bit to allow me to carry on to the gap.
Your driving has forced another vehicle to take action to avoid a collision. That's a fail.

Sounds like a bit of a two idiots meeting situation really. I wouldn’t consider you in the right particularly OP.

Highway Code

Don’t know about this case, obviously, but I can see how someone going uphill might think they have priority, all else being equal.
The full rule is:

HC said:
Rule 155
Single-track roads. These are only wide enough for one vehicle. They may have special passing places. If you see a vehicle coming towards you, or the driver behind wants to overtake, pull into a passing place on your left, or wait opposite a passing place on your right. Give way to road users coming uphill whenever you can. If necessary, reverse until you reach a passing place to let the other vehicle pass. Slow down when passing pedestrians, cyclists and horse riders.
Not sure it’s applicable to a “normal” road. When I learnt, giving priority to vehicles coming uphill was encouraged although I’d always assumed this was because in the old days cars were underpowered and might require a “run up” to get up hills. Don’t think that’s such an issue now.

That's what I figured cheers

I think the uphill bit trumps the side the obstruction is on bit.

People who drive X6s deserve to be inconvenienced at every practical opportunity.

You did nothing wrong OP.

In all seriousness, it looks like a narrow built up road and they were going too fast. People need to get over themselves and realise that cars are equipped with brakes and steering wheels for a reason and if they use them the world won’t end.

Rule 155, as quoted above, states 'On single-track roads...'
The road in the picture is not single-track.
Not sure how you reached your conclusion.

The road you were on is not a single track road by any stretch of the imagination.

Surely you don't really believe you were in the right to do what you did. Maybe ask you driving instructor on your next lesson for his input.

I don't think they were parked in my lane exactly

It's a village so it's just cars parked against the curb, no road markings

Happy to be corrected on the uphill bit but I would have seen that as a pretty simple they right of way as the traffic is parked on your side of the road.

Not if the other vehicle was already driving past the obstruction or had begun the manoeuvre.

If there are cars parked on my side of the road, I dont cross into the oncoming lane expecting others to give way to me. If someone did that to me I would be surprised at minimum. Your side of the road was blocked. Theirs wasn't till you were in it. It is annoying when others are driving too fast, but I can't control that.

Except the hazard line markings down the middle separating the two sides of the road

Unless I'm missing something, I think it depends on how big the gaps between the obstructions were and how easy it would have been for either of the cars to move sideways into them. Otherwise none of us would get anywhere in built up areas.

This. It could well be that the OP was in the right and a bit of give and take was needed from the BMW.
