I've read in several places that the advice for dealing with tailgaters is to slow down to let them pass.
Why is the OP getting so much stick for following the advice?

Firstly slowing from 60 to 30 is excessive.
We only have thr OP'S word this guy was tailgating him and if you read through this thread he is not the best judge of what actually happens

Agree.
The decision to overtake or not is on the following driver. Not the one in front assuming the follower should overtake. In the OP case the “tailgater” left at an upcoming exit so decided he wouldn’t overtake and have to pull back in close to the exit ( cutting up the car in front). His error was getting too close to the car in front instead of slowing earlier to maintain a gap.
Don’t become a “road captain” trying to influence others. If on a motorway maintain your steady speed.
Exceptions? Hmmmmm maybe to give an emergency vehicle on blues/twos pass easier IF (big IF) road conditions and traffic make this safe. Not a necessity though. Often not a good option.
There was no car in front road was very quiet. He was a good two miles from the exit he ended up taking. No reason for him at all to not overtake virtually nothing in any lane The decision to overtake or not is on the following driver. Not the one in front assuming the follower should overtake. The idiot in front acting stupidly & potentially doing something even more stupid.
AKA keep the idiot in front where you can see him better.

Not sure where you read that, but it's not good advice. Increase your distance from the vehicle in front is the correct procedure, and if there is somewhere safe to pull over to let them pass, consider doing so, although in this case that wouldn't apply. Slowing down to less than half the speed limit just exacerbates the situation. You may want to look at the RAC or Highway Agency advice on this. Why is the OP getting so much stick for following the advice?

if there is other traffic in front of you advice is to to increase the gap between you and the car in front by slowing down/lifting off the accelerator or otherwise slow and pull over to let them pass etc. Don't speed up and don't brake test them.

ETA, it's not 'slow down to let them pass' as you put at first, it's increase the gap to the car in front, as I put, which you then changed it to in your next post! And if you had read and understood the thread you'd know the op was on a m'way in the left lane, so where does he pull over to?
ETA also the op says there was no traffic in front, so 'slowing down to increase the gap from the car in front' isn't even relevant.

Sorry, I didn't realise it was obligatory to turn into an idiot when somebody flashes you, my mistake.Changing the subject slightly, FB sometimes gives me videos from 'dashcam clubs'. Very often the outraged dashcammer is the one who acted like a dick but his halo of dashcam self-righteousness stops him from seeing it - a bit like the boys in lycra.
