Was throwing out some old insurance paperwork and came across this:

'Any compulsory excess applicable to your policy (excluding voluntary excesses) will be waived, whether you are at fault or not, if Dash Camera footage (or any other form of visual recording) covering the period of, and immediately prior to, any accident can be provided within 48 hours of the incident occurring.'

This remarkably generous gesture can only be to encourage people to get dashcams - presumably because video evidence saves all the post-accident bickering and therefore loads of staff time. Is the offer commonplace?

I've avoided dashcams up to now because (1) I don't like 'tech' in general, (2) it might prove something was my fault! But if, in the unhappy event that I cause a crash, it seems it can only save me money. Or do they just add the XS they've waived onto next year's premium...?

Whatever the reason for this generosity, you can be sure the only person who will be generous in the end is you. Insurance companies and generosity are words rarely found keeping each other company.

Yes, I think you are right and the First Law of Cynicism applies.

It would be interesting to know the motivation though.

Getting what is usually irrefutable evidence quickly and easily saves them more money in admin costs overall than it costs them to not charge the excess.
