Why the quote marks around the word crime? The offence is defined by statute.
Which makes the unfortunate Albionant a criminal. Even more ridiculous rolleyes

How about focusing on the epidemic of knife crimes as priority? Murders by stabbing are reported almost daily. Two more are headline news this morning.

Whataboutary

It is obviously criminal. All of crime "a" doesn't have to be eliminated before crime "b" starts to be investigated - the idea is ridiculous.

And everyone's clear the road was subject to a 40mph limit right? 73 in a 70 would rightly be ignored.

The op somehow didn't see this 40 sign. That's bad enough, but you take your chances and you accept consequences.

A lot of the 40mph limits for traffic purposes are nonsense imo and often make the jam worse, but I still pay attention to them (i.e. look for cameras next to the gantry)

Simpo Two captured this event in a few words:

Don't expect logic to factor in the outcome... The State does arithmetic, not thinking. This is a rat in a barrel, unfortunately.

The money paid by road traffic offenders with victims doesn't really come close to the costs, so the rest back-fills it.
Costs of what? confused
Victim support, quite a lot of the money goes to support victims and families of those killed on the road.

I don't think traffic flow experts would agree with that.

Yet these same experts create humungous jams as 2-3 lanes of traffic at 70mph gets squashed into 1-2 lanes at 40mph.

I don't have the maths to prove it but think that speed is inversely proportional to congestion.

Advice about level of fine and points sound. If you get the option to plead guilty by post and suggestion of single justice procedure, refuse that offer, plead guilty but ask for a court hearing. Be sensible when you go, apologise briefly but sincerely (no, I shall not recommend acting classes) and expect points and a hit to the wallet. When you have your nine points, drive with a light foot.

If your preference is a ban then follow this terrible advice.
