Hi every one ,this is my first post on piston heads so please be gentle with me .
This is my experience of running a cheap insurance total loss from 2012 to 2024 ,at the time of paying 10k for a low mileage Audi tt black edition with 5000 miles on the clock being only 6 months old that was originally purchased that year for 41k , yes I took a gamble but looking back now my tt was the best car I have ever owned, I had it remapped to 260 bhp so great fun to drive , I bought her from a licensed breaker guy who got it from copart .Now the juicy bit ,it was sold to me with a cat B v5 . I was fully aware that the tt had water damage and the new v5 come back to me with my private registration on it ,so I insured and taxed it , so now I'm on the road
There was over a hundred fault codes that got cleared at a local VAG garage .and just 7 codes left for me to sort out.a Bosse Amp that got done under warranty and a door window motor and a few cheap fixes to clear the dash ,the V5 says in the special notes
1declaerd new at first registration
2 this vehicle has been salvaged due to serious structural damage.Following investigations a V5C reg cert has been issued as a exception.
I Managed to find the first owner and was told the tt was in a fresh water flash flood and only up to the door sills
I found out latter that year the licensed breaker guy had his nucles rapped by the DOT and was ordered to crush Aston Martin and a Farrari
Doing the same thing .
The lucky bit I suppose I hadn't needed to claim on any insurance to test the system always having in my mind I would get nothing ,the other uneasy time was its first MOT that it past with no problems.

A word to the wise, don't let them collect the car, unless you're willing to part with it. If it gets collected the chances are you'd end up paying hideous storage charges and even then it would come back worse than it left.
That's good advice - if Copart get hold of it you're unlikely to see it again!

When my car was made a Cat N last year by the insurer of the car that drove into the back of me I didn't get a decent valuation for it but I got to keep the car for 22% of the valuation (insurer was Admiral BTW).

When I told my insurer prior to renewal last month they wanted to see an MOT Pass issued after the incident date.
