Moved out of the way of a marked 4x4 or estate on the m18 on the way to work this morning and decided to follow him for a while (well they can't measure your speed if you behind them can they ).. According to my speedo he was doing nearly 100mph for no good reason, no lights or siren.. infact after a few miles he pulled over into the hard shoulder and had a rest.

I know plod drive around at 80-85mph and generally turn a blind eye to others doing the same, but 95-100mph takes the p**s surely?

Yes they can measure your speed if your behind them, and its a very silly thing to do to follow a police car at speed.

He could have been on a shout and had an exemption to travel at that speed, lights or no lights..

Agreed, sorry
But i did mention it was the M18, a fast motorway to begin with (100mph is about average for the fast lane when no plod are around).

He pulled onto the hard shoulder and sat there after 5 minutes.

Well were dealing with the unknown aren’t we. perhaps he was showing in attendance then someone else who was closer got there before him and he was told he was not needed...perhaps he had run out of petrol...perhaps he needed a piss....

Who knows.

I certainly don’t have a problem with doing a ton on a clear motorway in good conditions, but the copper prob would. Following a marked police car doing that speed, is literally buying yourself a ban if the wrong copper is behind the wheel, as they can VASCAR you from behind (as it were), and also take a detailed video of you in all your glory doing your ton..

Your licence, your choice..

Just thought i'd ask if thats normal behaviour thats all, cheers.

I shall refrain from chasing emergency vehicles up the motorway too

Which one is the 'FAST' lane then - I thought they were called 'Overtaking' lanes

The outside one, you know, the one full of cars moving very fast, typically BMW's and Audi's

No need to roll your eyes at me

No, that's an overtaking lane.

VASCAR or Police Pilot will do very nicely thank you!

Were you privy to the radio messages in that vehicle in the previous hour before you had any sight of that police vehicle?

How do you know why they decided to exceed the permitted limit?

Be very careful about tailing speeding police vehicle, especially RPU vehicles. You may get a nasty shock.

Only two officers opinion without any mechanical measuring device is required. Do you still feel so safe about your actions now?

No, that's an overtaking lane.

It's an overtaking lane when there are vehicles to be overtaken. It's a (not so) fast lane when people just sit in it for the sake of it. Middle lane hoggers are bad enough, but I do hate it when I come across outside lane hoggers.

I knew he was speeding because he came up behind me when i was doing 70mph at what i could guess at around 90-100mph. I moved over and he sped on by, i followed for a while, but not for long, we hit a wall of hgv's after a minute or so (normally packed with them at this time of day). The traffic was bunched together in lumps because of the HGV's breaking traffic flow, its not usually that hazardous to pick up speed in the gap area were there is no traffic. I also kept a good distance behind him as i knew it would be harder to judge my speed plus i didn't have a background of slower moving cars.

I'll probably not dare it again knowing i can get busted from behind.

He might have been on a shout and then stood down. You don't have any idea at all as to what he was doing or why he was doing it... He may have needed to get to that part of the motorway quickly for some reason. As said in an earlier post - you couldn't hear what was being said on their radio channel

The fact that they didn't take any action against the numpty driver behind them matching their speed might give you a clue that they may have had something more pressing to do than deal with than that driver behind them...

... then again ... maybe they noted your registration number and processed your offence when they got back to the nick later on when they had more time. Beware the postmans knock

I don't think i matched their speed the whole time i held back quite a bit, they were doing over a ton and built up a good distance, i only started to catch up when they hit the back end of yet another whacky race between a few HGV's.

I only wrote this thread because i thought it was unusual to see the plod tearing down the motorway one minute, without flashing lights, then a few minutes later take a rest on the hard shoulder

Indeed. Hard shoulders are dangerous. I know a traffic officer who was parked on the hard shoulder of the M27 when a lorry went straight in to the back of it, shortening the Volvo T5 estate by half it's length. Very scary photos. Officer is now on light duties. That is why only properly equipped cars should ever stop vehicles on motorways.

Thats fair enough... I can however ASSURE you they were not "taking a rest" on the hard shoulder.

Sounds to me like it's possible they could have stopped next to a marker post to begin calibration of the VASCAR equipment. Or it is also possible they could have stopped there in order to slow traffic approaching a unexpected hazard. Or they could have been investigating a report of a person walking along the hardshoulder in the area... could have been any reason. But they certainly wouldn't have been "resting"

I knew they weren't resting, just i couldn't figure out what it was they were doing, looked to me like they were familiarising themselves with their vehicle
