In the Express one day last week - came across this article by Jo Mcfarlane.

Drivers have reached the end of the road when it come to good manners.

article said:

Once behind the steering wheel - the Highwaqy Code ist chucked away und respect for other road user fly through sun roof

Per the article it seem half of us blast the horn if someone upset in any way.

Und they sound horns in frustration whilst in traffic jams.
Cannot say I notice this - no one blasts horn at me und I never see cursing going on at me. Und I have never heard horns blasting away when in a jam either.

Perhaps we are civilised up North then

Article says the survey commissioned by AA reveals this tooting feast of bad attitude ist a southern thing.. South East. They also say MEN sound horn when stuck in traffic too.

Apparently the majorist of battle go on in car parks - where drivers will nick the space which you were waiting to become clear.

This has happened to me once - und you see mamas fighting over drop off spaces at school run too

There ist also lack of manners over parking in Mama/Toddler Bays und no one will give up a spot near supermarket door for elderly driver either.

(I park away from madding crowds at supermarket.. ist a lot safer und I like to stretch legs )

Almost half in survey say they toot horn at what they consider inconsiderate driving as well.

The Scots say they will wait for another car to complete manoeuvre und the Welsh und South West are the ones who ticked yes to "thanking for courtesy of give way to them."

(Yet they have the most points on licence thanks to DICK - was one in eleven with three or more - per that Real Story prog! )

Drivers say they are most annoyed by

tailgaters

being cut up

lane hogging

fail to indicate

Slow drivers irritate ... speeding drivers irritate. headlight flashers und fog lights also irritate.

Yet depsite this - we all apppreciate that friendly nod of thanks und 96% claim to do this.

Courteous driving ist not a legal requirement (but we include it in our C in COAST ) but as AA say politeness does make for safer und more pleasurable experience for all.

SO if in jam on M25 - chill out.. to Wogan..teasing Boggy over his three points by hidden talivan or Classic FM or my fave CD "Music for Minors" which ist very relaxing for a family

Good manners when driving can make a big difference i reckon, as they can in every other part of life.

Was very annoyed by 2 different driver on Wednesday. very busy traffic in town so i left a gap to let a girl out of a junction, i noticed she had been there from a way back in a que. about 30 seconds after i let her out she deliberatly closed a gap to stop someone getting out of another junction (we were at less than walking pace).
2 minutes later i let a guy out of a junction in similar circumstances and he did the same as the girl TWICE within 200 yrds.
Can these people not see the context of their actions?

Luckily about 20 mins later once into the open road i encountered a convoy of very fast motorcycle riders. as they approached i eased of on each short straight and moved to nearside, each one gave a little acknowledgement which made me feel a lot more likely to do the same in the future.
Unlike the car driver in front who, whilst averaging 30-35 on the NSL with passenger and (unrestrained) dog on the back seat failed to notice any of them until they were passing him at which stage he swerved in reaction and gesticulated at a couple of them.

just realised how much of a rant that was.

Why are the most annoying things on the road always listed as:

Tailgaters
Being cut up
Lane hogging
Fail to indicate

Yet the goverment/Police don't do anything about it? Surely it would make the road a safer a nicer place to be?? (It's a retorichal question. Because it's not as revenue generating as scameras...)

I allways find bikers to be good for thanking you for moving out the way to let them past. 90% of bikers I see are carefull when passing and will give a friendly wave when you move over.

On the other hand ........

I did have some total maniac (bike courier) try and undertake me at high speed when I was overtaking a lorry in the fast lane of the M6. In my car this would annoy me, but in the work van with very poor rear visibility it was very dangerous. Had I not been looking in my left mirror I could have easily killed the guy.
I moved over as soon as I had cleared the lorry only to see him attempt three or four similar moves in traffic infront of me.

It is a shame when a small number of idiots give everyone a bad name. It's easier to remember the bikers that cut us up rather than all the the ones that gave thanks for giving them room to pass. Perhaps it's the same reason why BMW drivers get such a bad rap - we only remember them 'cause being cut up by vauxhall corsas is an hourly event
