What's the betting that once/if the NHS database is up and running, info from that will be sold to commercial interests and exchanged with other government agencies like the FSS etc.

I think you will find that Pharmacy companies are already asking for this information so they can target their drugs more efficiently.

I don't think 1984 is wrong, its just a few steps too far, in the same way but the other direction that describes us now.
Are you saying you approve of the world Orwell envisioned? And what do you think is "in the other direction" in regard to our current and developing situation in the UK? - Streaky I don't think 1984 is wrong, its just a few steps too far, in the same way but the other direction that describes us now.

Effectively already been agreed. Approx 250,000 people will have access to your private medical files on day 1.

Nope, the world orwell envisioned is a tightly controlled police state. The opposite of orwells vision is equally unappealing, a libertarian state, where the police are impotent, justice is heavily in favour of the criminal, society has no cohesion or social conscience because the individual is paramount.
Now I don't want either of those things but if I had to say where we were today, I would say that justice is in favour of the criminal, the police are impotent, and very few people even know what I mean by a social conscience.
I don't want to lose my individual freedoms and would probably instantly vote for any government that promised to spend their entire term sitting on their hands rather than making nonsensical laws. But there is a balance to be struck here, and I am prepared to lose a little of my personal freedom such that criminals who are just taking the mick, lose a lot of theirs. I'm prepared for the state to step in at an early age and reroute children who are on a crash course with criminality before they get there.
My problem is I agree with the idea but don't trust any government to actually manage to carry it off without completely cocking it up.
