Yeah the flashing bit seems to be numpty-speak for 'oh my god I didn't see you behind me cos i wasn't looking and now you've just gone straight past me i'm sure you were going too fast and i could see a car coming in the other direction what do i do now oh i know i'll flash my lights'.

Or something like that.

Nah, bearing in mind the thinking time for these people is similar to watching car ferries park, they just wouldn't have time for all that cognative stuff. I reckon they see you go past, (well a flash) then the response is OOOOH (pause) go to wipe windscreen and hit wrong swich (pause) OOOOH (by now you are out of site) wobble round next 80mph bend at 30mph then find right switch.

Surely you mean "59.5mph" bend? I mean, surely you're not suggesting...?

Sorry, I'm upside down in Australia but the logic escapes me. I cannot agree with answer "c".

If one is travelling at the speed limit then why should you slow to allow a car travelling at an illegal speed - with his headlights on!!! - to overtake. How fast is "faster" 1 mph? 10 mph? 100mph

The onus should be on the driver travelling faster to overtake safely.

Perhaps we should start penalising drivers who travel at 5 or more mph BELOW the speed limit??

Woohoo someone one the other side of the world thinks exactly like me.

I'd love to see something done about those that can't drive faster than an HGV on any road. An HGV overtaking on a normal road is a scarey site.

It certainly will be a safe new year...

The car will be in the drive for 2 days while us Scots but try to avoid

Howardo has dragged us back to my original post, so I feel compelled to respond.

Obviously the behaviour HurtBiker encountered was just daft:
quote:

ha ha! we were out on the bike, zoomed up behind Volvo, already on my way into an overtake, and the stupid idiot SLAMMED on the brakes.

This spoilt the graceful line I was taking past, and I had to go even wider.
His "thoughtful" DSA approved gesture nearly had me off !! good one DSA.

And I agree that, as in the Highway Code, it IS ultimately the overtaker's responsibility to make a safe manouevre.

But I think we should learn from M-Way behaviour, as with :
quote:

You also have people who are faster than you come up behind and flash you - not out of impatience, but to let you know they are coming. You just move over, let them past, and carry on - you don't get pissed off becuase they are going faster than you.

Why should overtaking on single C-ways be so reprehensible, yet we agree it should be made easy and stress-free on M-ways?

I'm sure most drivers are intelligent enough to facilitate being safely overtaken by a fast moving vehicle, in exactly the same way you might get out of the way of an ambulance/jam-sandwich.
Sure, don't put yourself out to a stupid extent. But maybe back off a bit to make the overtake safer, pull over a couple of feet, or just don't accelerate so hard out of a tight corner, while flipping your left indicator. (I think this is what Nightmare was saying.)

Also, remember the "lunatic" behind could have a damn good reason for tearing down the dotted line. Might be plain clothes plod. Or a Tiv driver about to part-ex. Or worse, some complete maniac who might shove you off the road then take a crow-bar to your nose if you hold him up. Or a lesser fool who will attempt to overtake dangerously out of frustration later. Or just someone having a bad day, who might be less pissed off at the end of their journey if people are courteous to them.

Hey man, let's all just chill out and be cool to the other dude behind the wheel.

OK, we can get back to ranting about queue jumpers now...

when I got my 1963 Landy up to the heady speed of 75mph, I always flashed dawdlers - only 'cos it used to take me a minute to get to that speed !!

Generally the sight of 2 tons of disagreeably large vehicle bearing down on them caused a "moving over", but it's amazing how few people actually check the mirror once in lane.

What is it in this country, with not using mirrors?
