I was there recently (well I think I was) is this Kent? I saw the usual specs type as well as the new smaller white SPECS type of the sort you find at Tesco car parks. The new ones are called PIPS and are tiny.

ANPR, I posted the pixs, they are NOT speed cameras, or specs

What do they do with the data though? Say they detect a car with a non-matching plate (i.e. stolen). Then what? Road tax is irrelevant as with the new system, it does not matter if the car is on the road or not (checking for SORNED cars only then or so? )

I would have thought that it would only be useful if a police car was there to stop the offender there and then

Once again the small round white cameras are NOT specs. They are i believe if not anpr they are the new emissions cameras for mr Livingstones emissions charging scam. Specs cams are always a dual square unit painted yellow on a blue pole in series of three (its law as it were that they have to be in three first two time you third records your plate iirc).

Nope I think you're wrong on this. I looked at the PIPS site sometime back and I'm sure it said they would be used for SPECS apoplications, I may have read that on here as well. Pistonheads gets the news first smile Look here.

PIPS are small and the ones I saw were mounted as a pair monitoring 2 lanes at the side of the road, just like SPECS. I had to do a double take as these are the first ones I've seen on the highway. If they are PIPS being used for ANPR they're going to catch out loads of people.

Ok There appears to be confusion over function of the two. You are right to a certain extent about the mounting of pips in that they seem kinda similar to specs big difference is pips are generally on grey nonedescript poles and they sit on their own unlike spec which have a yellow square housing with a smaller infra red unit mounted on the side of each casing and allwyas on ablue pole with a little imprinted logo on the 90 angle of the main post. Specs are also always mounted in series of three ie three sets of poles with cameras over each lane over a mile or two.

The pips are either anpr (automatic number plate recognition) or are being used for ken livingstones new emissions control zone which is what i suspect the new ones on the a2 are for (main route into london). They DO NOT read your speed.

SPECS are the only ones used in the application of speed registering and are usually placed on roadworks. Up north they are also sadly used simply to scam people but south of london they are used sensibly.

Sa as for the A2 ones i wouldnt worry unless your car is untaxed/uninsured or belching out huge quantities of smoke.

How do you know that 'they' are only using the normal SPECS units and aren't supersceding them with the superior PIPS units? Are you certain they are only being used for Ken's tax?

I'd still be wary on this route. Have a look at this link:

http://www.pipstechnology.co.uk/products.php?secti...

As for SPECS operating in 3 locations I'm pretty sure you only need 2 locations, ie an entry point and then the second camera clocks your speed at the exit point. 3 Cameras mean they can get more people over a greater distance. Or, am I missing something?

If you re read that document you will notice they state it can be used to time cars HOWEVER to do so would require a minimum of two sets of cameras which there are not on the A2 on top of which if that is what they are trying to use them for i should have recieved numerous tickets by now. Also they have to be home office approved for that purpose and am not sure they are will look into it though (ok looked into it and there is presently only one type approval it would appear for specs which would be the yellow ones (IE they are the only ones allowed to be used for speed measurement over a distance between two points) according to a home office document however this document was a response to an information request in 2005 and is not absolutely clear but it appears there is a dispute between pips and the company who do specs which means only specs hold approval as i understand it.

Excellent idea.

We should boycott all companies complicit in the speed and congestion rackets.

We should encourage local shops and pubs to bar their employees.

We should shun them entirely and drive them from society if they will not repent.

...and we should do the same to those involved in the ID scheme and every other manifestation of creeping fascism.

My point exactly there is only one set as they are not home office approved for speed measurement which means it would be illegal to use them for that application.

I haven't seen those ones. I saw 2 PIPS cameras on a gantry at the nearside of the road. It was getting dark so I don't know if there was a second set plus I don't know exactly where I was. Think I was probably on the M2 headed for the M25.

And how long do you think it will take to get approval ? One phone call ?
