Was it a camera...?!?!?

Got the following from a mate of mine, who doesn't have web access... can anyone help / give advice?!?
Went through a speed detection device of some kind last night, 3am. It flashed up my speed but no flash which would denote a camera. It was on the A507 west bound from A1 in temporary 30 zone, and I scored 44 because some prat was tailing me. He was so close that my speed was only up for a second and was replaced with his, I was braking as we went into the speed limit and because he was behind me went through at 34. As I said close enough for me to see his as well.
It is a straight piece of road with cones down the side of it. There were two 30 signs with this Your speed is board between them. Can't exactly remember where it was, in relation to villages etc. It was National down to 30 for about 200 metres and then derestricted.
Is my mate in the brown stuff... or will he be lucky?!?
