One of the main roads near my house is currently a 30 and its even perfectly safe round most of it to do 40 apart from on one corner (not that I do of course!). Had a letter through from the council saying that they are making the whole road a 20 zone now. Not only that but every 10 meters they are putting speed bumps. In the 50 or so meters from a 40mph road to my house I'll now encounter 5 or 6 bumps. I'd understand them putting bumps around the one sharp corner to slow people down for safety but putting that many is surely just taking the pi$$.

Best start canvassing all the houses in that area then. If you get enough people against it then at least you can present a decent-size opposition to the council than just yourself. You should consider yourself lucky that at least they bothered to notify you personally! I woke up one morning to find a road almost right outside my house that used to be a 30 was now a 20, and consequently too late to do anything about it!

Fire a letter into the local council asking for details of the accident history of the road asking on what grounds the limit is being lowered and why this new limit needs to be enforced specifically by speed bumps rather than any other method. Write to your local newspapers drawing attention to the proposals making reference to impeding ambulances and the potential loss of life that could result.

PS - Take a look at the ABD site, one of the secion deals with making objections to your local council:

Lois,

Give the hospital a ring and speak to someone who drives ambulances, do they know about the plans for speed humps?

Ambulances use that road a lot and speed bumps will cause delays possibly leading to someone’s death.

Get well soon

Are you serious? This is the most dangerous place to put humps. Especially for bikers.

Plus you said this bend is already sharp enough to slow people down.

I live in high wycombe and the bast**d council has jumped on the speed hump wagon, one particular road has humps on quite bad corners and a few bikers have come off, the are in the local paper every now and then complaining.

If they plan to make it a "20 zone" rather than just a 20 limit, I thought that meant it had to be self-enforcing? So there should be no humps, just chicanes, rumble strips, pointless give way narrowings, etc -- much better of course.

Thats true with it being so close to the hospital. There have only been 2 accidents which I know have happened on that road since I've lived here (14 years) and they were in the same week and caused buy boy racers taking that corner too fast.

Who of course now will be able to take the corner just as fast but now be airborne too - marvellous!

If every one was to beep the horn when they go over these speed bumps, then I bet it wouldn't be long before the council were forced to remove them.
This could also be the same for some speed cameras.

Up for sale on Autotrader.

Only £3k. I wonder how many passes will flatten a speed hump. Squished into oblivion.

I agree with that theory.....

I am going to get a truck horn installed.

Speedhumps would have not stopped these accidents.. you can only do 10mph round that corner...

I am planning to write to the council to object as that road is on MY direct route to hospital. Do you have any contact details??

Richard
