I'm not really contributing to the thread here. I just wanted to say that Tonyrec's sage advice and PHer's good humoured recognisance of the same is what, to me, SP&L is all about. Nice to see.

These cameras were not a problem to me as I was travelling at the correct speed. I was merely reinforcing your efforts, letting others know to keep an eye on the speedo!!!

I am always careful (50mph max) along the a40 there as I am aware of the problems the road has - it is a very regular route for me.

Puggitt - high mileage means seeing a lot of these vans now!

Also, as a result of the abnormaly high death rate amongst 'innocent' drivers, there will be 2 unmarked cars patrolling the A40, so if you speed, undertake, tailgate you will be caught and prosecuted.

Im sure that will not apply to anyone on here

that has been long overdue, nice one!!!

Really you shouldnt undertake.
If im travelling along at the speed limit and theres a vehicle going slower in lane 4, then i would undertake as its a lot safer than coming up behind the slower car.
If however, it was in lane 2 then i would overtake as normal.

Its far safer and more sensible when theres an idiot cruising along in the outside lane at below the limit, to undertake in lane 1. You just have to be careful that he/she doesnt swerve across as you are doing it and collides with you because it will almost certainly look bad for you.

The Law says that you shouldnt undertake but applied with a bit of common sense there are times when you can.
The bottom line is that you have to be careful.

I thought undertaking was part of the highway code, which was advisory and not Law..??? I'm sure I read that on here somewhere - so what would you prosecute someone for if they were undertaking?

Thats the nice part about it, 'advising' drivers.

Yeah, 'advising' with a stick !!!

No, only joking, from most of your posts I've read since being on here you seem a 'thoroughly decent chap'.

I was in essence talking about 'Undertaking' at above the speed limit.
As ive said, safety is of paramount importance here.

If someone is bimbling along at 60 in a 70 in lane 2 of 3 then theres noway that i would undertake.
If this person, for whatever reason decides to close the door on you as youre sliding past on the inside and you collide then its down to you, no if or buts about it.

On the other hand, same senario but you go through on the outside and this person again decides to shut the door then its down to him, again..no if's or buts about it.

If you undertake at above the speed limit and you collide then its down to you, a classic case of Without Due Care and if you cause a serious accident then it could be Causing Death By Dangerous.

As ive said before, if this person is doing 60 in a 70 in lane 3 then providing its safe for me to do so then i would undertake without hesitation using lane 1 (safety first).
If he was doing 70 then i would not entertain it at all.

It really is down to the driver, and hes the one thats got to answer if it all goes t**ts up!
