The BBC said:
Police target bad drivers

Police in north west London are stopping cars and offering motorists a course to improve their driving skills.

The area has seen 13 deaths and 11 fatal collisions during November - mostly caused by bad or dangerous driving, according to traffic police.

Although part of the problem is drink-driving, other faults include tailgating, undertaking and speeding.

Specialist vehicles equipped with video cameras have been patrolling fast roads in the area - including the A40, A406, A1 and A41 - and have been stopping and reporting dangerous driving and offering courses at the London Driving Improvement Scheme.

Are things beginning to change, or is this a cover for more speed targeting?

Fame at last eh?

Seriously though, that was my boss on the Tv last night.
We have been doing this course of action for a while now, targeting Bad and Dangerous drivers and some people are given the option of the London Driver Improvement Scheme as an option to prosecution.

Willcrash has himself patrolled many hours in the unmarked Provida cars and referrred untold drivers to the scheme.
Dont get me wrong, but many have also been reported for a wide range of Offences too.

A while ago i gave warning that we were intensifying the use of Unmarked cars in our area and so far the results have been worth it.
With 2 cars out everyday, the chances of capture are on the up,in fact, they are now in favour of the Police/Justice system. This is most certainly the way forward and it has to be said that driver education can only be of benefit for everyone who uses the roads in whatever way, shape or form.

What are the chances of this going nationwide?

(Or of the Times reporting PH approval of a genuine safety scheme)

Tony

Excellent! I have absolutely nothing to fear from an unmarked police car. As a matter of interest, if 2 are unmarked, how many are marked, during an average shift.

I know that marked cars will always be needed for attendence at accidents and pursuits but unmarked cars are the way forward!

I have known their be only 1 Trafpol car patrolling the whole area..this was when we were all doing 'Op Safer Streets' and naturally this was only a marked car. We didnt have the luxury of sending out any Unmarked ones.

However, the last few weeks and up until about 2am we have been putting out at least 6 cars. These target the obvious Drink Drivers as well as answering the many calls from both Police and the Public alike.

Unmarked cars are fine until you want to stop an unaccompanied female during the hours of darkness. I have always told both my wife and daughter that if an unmarked car with any sort of blue light wants to stop them at night they are to stop, lock their doors, open the drivers side window about half an inch and ask the driver of the 'police' car to drive to the nearest police station and that she will follow, but to stay on main and well-lit roads all the way. If they won't do that to drive off and call 999 on their mobile - 'hands-free, of course!
Now, is that a sensible instruction?
Bear in mind that it ain't difficult to get a couple of small spotlights, fit them behind the grill with a bit of blue plastic film over them, and get what looks like a police uniform from a fancy dress shop (after all, the 'policewomen strippers' get them!).
Tony, what would you do if someone did just that and you had stopped them for a fairly mionor offence?

This is always a difficult one but your advice is sound and very similar to what i gave to my significant other.

No BiB would contest this advice and its a sad state of affairs that it has come to this.

Obviously, when the Police car gets into position for the stop, if you are at all unsure then keep driving (to a Police Stn), stick to the main roads and dont drive dangerously to try to lose the following car unless its obvious that its not the Police. It wont be long before you are joined by several marked vehicles.

In reality, if you are refusing to stop and driving dangerously (when marked cars are behind you)then theres a very good chance that you will be 'stung'

Whenever divisional CID (or other plain clothed car)need a vehicle stopping then they call for a Maked vehicle to assist
with the stop, regadless of whether or not its a lone female.

Sadly, you sometimes come accross the pisstakers who try not to stop for you and blame it on the 'unsure it was Police' aspect, but then again, sometimes they try this when you are in a marked car as well.

I believe all drivers convicted of dangerous drivng should in lieu of an automatic 12 month ban (min) get the option to sit and pass the Advanced driving course before they are let out on the road again.

Many years ago, 1970 I think, I had a friend who owned several cash type businesses in Southend on Sea. Late on a Saturday evening he would collect the cash and take it home with him to put into his safe. He drove a Lotus Cortina and was going along the Southend Arterial when an unmarked police car tried to stop him for slight speeding. My buddy had around £10000 in cash in the car and wasn't stopping for anyone (in Essex you can get killed for less), especially an unmarked car. He went quicker and lost the unmarked car. I should mention that he was also a quite well known international rally driver, so this was not too difficult for him, especially as it was wet. He was eventually charged with dangerous driving as the unmarked car could not keep up with him and they alleged (correctly) 3 figure speeds, but the magistrates threw it out when he produced confirmation of the level of cash he was carrying. In fact the magistrates recommendation was that at night only marked cars should be used on routine traffic duties.
No point to this, but a nice little true story to relieve the afternoon's work!

Can you imagine that!

Withdraw all your cash, put it in the boot and hooli around and if you get caught...hmmmmm....(not so sure that i would like to try it).

Some of the local Courts that i deal with would say......"how much money do you have on you"? "Thanks, we will take it all"

I will be out and about in my favourite unmarked Traffic car on Friday and Saturday from 6pm to 2am and then reverting back to a marked car unitl 6am
To me this is the best type of traffic work going, we get to stop the worst type of driver and then show them a tape of their poor driving.
I have negotiated more moey and time on this project and it may even end up with a dedicated squad of traffpols and a large pool of unmaked cars.
