Watching this 1960's film this morning. About 15 minutes in, there was a scene at a police station and on the wall was a large poster which said "BAD DRIVING KILLS"

Funny old world isn't it?

I presume you are referring to the way that view has been lost in favour of the modern notion that the only thing that kills is speed?

The work of a advertising executive, who realised that, "Speed kills, kill your speed" works better as a slogan than, "Bad driving kills, kill your bad driving".

You know, perhaps that's what happened. The entire "speed kills" issue was dreamed up by an 'ad firm' ... and eveything now has to be distorted to fit

Yes, and those were the days of the Green Cross Code. ...when you had no-one else to blame but yourself if you walked into the road in front of a car.

So now it is acceptable for pedestrians to walk in front of cars.

The motorist has to be blamed for everything now, as they have become mobile cash dispensers for the government.

All those PR Advertsing types have to think up new slogans, as obviously all the bad drivers killed themselves ages ago, only speeders left to cause accidents these days.

Do they still teach the green cross code?

I remember that when I was at school it was drilled into us both by the teachers and the occasional visiting policemen. Most of us reckoned that the policeman had a point so we looked for safe places to cross. The point was reinforced when a mate got knocked down when he dashed on front of a car (driving within the speed limit, he didn't look). That tought us all a lesson.

I also remember compulsory cycling proficiency tests at school.

And free milk.

And when everyone walked to school.

.........and I'm only 32. What the hell has happened in the last 15-20 years????????

I walked to school along an unlit NSL with no pavement on either side!

OK, OK, the NSL was 40mph, traffic (out of holiday season) was mostly farm machinery (and any local who saw me gave me a lift ... and I took it with my parent's blessing).

That was 40 (or so) years ago on Jersey, CI.

I got run over by a motorbike when I was about 9, I ran out in front of the poor guy (It was a Honda 90 step-through so he CAN'T have been doing 30!) and I remember thinking that I wasn't sure if I wanted to survive to face my mother's rant about being so stupid...

It was rather sore and I decided not to do it again.

I should have sued him because if he'd been doing 30 he'd have been past by the time I ran out.

Oh, I think the modern 'translation' is, "The motorist is always wrong!"

Don't know about the Green Cross Code. I can tell you that Cycling proficiency IS still done - by volunteer parents. If no parents volunteer to do it....then it doesn't happen..at least around our way.
