Well I work on the highway (not m/way) and the amount of twats who fly past at morethan 40+ in a 30 is amazing.
There are roadwork signs, road narrow signs and still they fly past or then have jam on the anchors hitting/ clipping my cones with me working there. That is bad awareness or not giving a toss to who works on the road.

Do you have the same attitude when you drive through someone elses or your own residential area?
Hmmmmmm I wonder

You'd know the answer if you knew me

So now you'll just have to wonder MC

Putting my RoSPA hat on for a moment.. but aren't roadworks just another hazard? so as long as you follow the "system" (Information, Position, Speed, Gear, Acceleration) then the hazard will be negotiated safely.

I know that the average driver knows nothing about Roadcraft but shouldn't we be rectifying that issue rather than simply stating that anything over the speed limit is inappropriate?

About the only place where I do not have issue with scam is roadworks!

Agree with rospa 100%! Just another hazard where common sense should take precedence! (Yeah - we know - the numpty does not have the single brain cell he was born with anyway!)

Would say that you English do seem to take an awful long time to repair roads compared to mainland Europe. It is taking longer to repair T-HELLwall than it probably did to build it in the first place! By the time they have finished - the tarmac they are laying now will be worn out!

Perhaps instead of erecting yet more scams - perhaps invest in proper "THINK!" campaign that adresses 2-second rule (saw old, but GOOD to the POINT one from 70s on that "bit of fun - trivialise the HC effort a bit back" ), driving through road works etc. to get messages across to the normally law-abiding, but complete twazak on occasion slightly below to average driver.

Just a thought!

absolutely agree with everyne who has complained about totally unmanned roadworks not being 'shut down' when not being used,. As has already been said, if you cry wolf too many times people stop taking notice.

I think people who speed through roadworks do need a good kicking, but if all works were forced to only display "working now" signs when they actually were working, then I genuinely belive people would pay more attention.

I dont think its a legal thing really, I think its simply a laziness one - they cant be arsed to go and cover the first and last sign with a cloth - hardly a lot of work!

It does require a 40 limit as there is only a few cones seperating the 'workforce' from vehicular traffic.
If people cant show respect for other peoples safety with the 40 limit for 2 miles then they are getting all they deserve.

I will meet a few more this afternoon no doubt!

As an aside, people cant/wont obey the 70 limit (within reason) and thats why we are kept so busy.

So I assume that the limit is taken back up to 70 when the layabouts go home at 5:00?

No? What a surprise.

Probably the second point. I suppose the reasoning is that you are only removing one tenth of a worker from the economy for every motorway worker that you mow down.

Perhaps there is a worldwide shortage of shovel leaners, and hole watchers, so we should be trying to conserve them.

I mean, where would we be with only one fat moron to look at each hole?

I think you're being a bit unfair to motorway workers. Hard physical work is tough and you can't keep it up all day without breaks. Those who were forced to in the PoW camps in the war mostly died.

The problem is much more that the roadworks are not managed properly to be completed with all speed. The Longbridge roundabout (M40 J15) has roadworks at present, due to last until August. Last week it took me an hour just to negotiate the roundabout, and others were stuck for 4 hours (letter in local paper). So are these works 24x7? Of course not -- 8x5 only as far as I can see. Total false economy.

Let's have all roadworks 24x7 and get them cleared away. That way we know that the speed limits are valid because there WILL be someone working, and we get rid of them asap.

ok Mr Expert then point us toward the document/policy that provides data that it should be 40MPH so that we may see why driving past cones etc requires such a low speed, please post your responce here.

Steady up. We are lucky to have serving police on this forum but they wont stay long if we treat them badly.[/quote]

Agreed. Sgt Roc you embarrass yourself with your weak sniping. Shut it and go back to the Noddy forum!

Does it really require a 40mph limit? Would 50 or 60 be more apropriate? If so, then would 50 or 60 be better respected? When they make the limit too low there is that red mist effect. The sandalistlentilistthinkofthechildrenists are responsible for a lot of deaths, and your resultant rise in blood pressure. I agree 80 or 90 is too fast but what price we pay for bad road management.

Well, i tell you what, you stand on the other side of the cones in a 40mph road works area and have idiots fly past your head at 90mph.... See how you like it!???

I can guarantee that you will slow down the next time you enter roadworks EVEN if there are no limits. Its all about APPROPRIATE speed! If the roadworks aren't being worked, eg sunday and vis is good, fair enough. If they are being worked, then please do yourself and the workers a favour and slow a bit eh?

Been on that side of the cones and its not fun.....

I really apreciate what you are saying. I cannot help but think though if you knew all the people flashing past were competent then their speed would be unalarming. I certainly get very scared by some of the things people do on the road and it is rarely to do with speed, invariably to do with the lack of skill of those involved.

In reality of course the risk assessments will ultimately ban cones as they do not provide adequate protection for workers. I would like to see each motorway to have a spare set out next to it so essential road maintenance can be carried out risk free. There is also the advantage that this policy would wind the greens up.

Not the St Neots conefest TonyRec?

If it is, try it at night. Blinding lights in your face, flashing directional lights, more signs than a deaf persons conference. It really has to be seen to believed. How you are supposed to see the road, lord only knows.
