My area has become very speed sensitive - I reckon the average driver has dropped about 5 mph in the last 18 months.

Is this the case round your way?

And if this is endemic has there been a drop in KSIs?

Anyone got access to the latest data/any trafpol got any anecdotal?

If it gets much worse I'm gonna get a bike with a basket on to go shopping

Same in my area, people are sticking to the posted limits more freqently ( no matter how stupidly low they are set )

Has anyone else noticed that your typical "Sunday driver" will drive way below the posted limit on 60/70 mph carriageway but on leaving them to 30's always drive way above !

Getting this a lot around Lancashire.

'twas ever thus. My grandfather drives at a 'safe and sensible' (yeah, right) 47mph everywhere.

I have noticed HGV's sticking to 40MPH on A roads now, with a huge build-up of traffic behind thanks to the extra solid white lines that seem to be appearing.

I have also noticed an increase in dashed areas covered in red paint designed to discourage overtaking. Because of this, and the threat of a scamera van lurking on any decent straight, no-one seems to overtake any more and, even worse, they seem to get shirty if I have the audacity to pass.

Now unless I am mistaken, the highway code says absolutely nothing about red paint apart from London's "Red routes" and unless I am also mistaken, it has no meaning in law.

Hatched areas mean you should not (As opposed to must not) go over them, ie, it is advisory but not illegal to overtake on them.

Any BiB's wish to correct me on this?

If the lines (on the outside) are broken then it is fine. HC rule 109.

Tho the word 'necessary' is involved there is no stipulation of what exactly this implies.

It may be 'necessary' to maintain progress.

All these extra wide broken central lines just makes it safer for all us non numpties who know & can see better to make swifter progress

Red paint or Red tarmac? BIG difference - red tarmac is usually anti-skid treatment - and damn useful (used properly)

Red tarmac..... Means nothing, but a bit tricky on the centre of the road in an emergency. Extra grip on the wheels opposing the traffic flow could be dodgy. Not in a hurry to test that theory!

Average speed wise, we ran a new style laguna a short while back with a trip computer..

Trip to work consists of ..
short (couple of hundred metres) drive to bypass (NSL)
Couple of islands
continue on NSL road, uninterupted until 2 miles from office
Round island, NSL road
Down 50Mph road for short distance
Into 30 for v short distance.
Office car park.
19 miles in total.

Average speed for this journey over 3 months.....

30.2 Mph..

I reckon the average speed through a small town near me (ie. between me and the town centre) has dropped its average speed... unfortunately it's now more dangerous because people accelerate up to the speed camera, hit the breaks (with their eyes on their speedo rather than the road of course), and don't see the numerous children with absent mothers who don't know how to cross a road.

Fine the mothers is what I say!
