The gap between dual carriageways can be a simple falt piece of grass and I think I've seen that a number of times.
As said earlier a carriageway is that piece of the highway which has been tarmaced to allow passage of carriages

Dual carriageway is where there are two of them separated by just about anything
A single carriageway with cross hatching down the middle is a single carriageway

Motorways are something else. In another thread someone also mentioned special roads.
