The limit is fine at 70mph...

People are a little naughty and exceed it...at 80-90mph, rarely getting stopped....

Put the speed higher and many people will do 100mph+ in unsuitable cars with bugger all experience...

Best how it is..and policed sensibly..

So why is it OK in Germany....?

Oh yes, but it's been tested in Court and your opinion disregarded.

See here.

So there...............

And what about your buddies doing it on TV.....in heavy traffic where I wouldn't even consider it....?

But it's not MY opinion or the opinion of ANY BiB..the opinion if that of a judge/jury..based on what a careful, safe and competant driver would do/think.

Having said that... 150mph driver WILL get a lengthy ban and heavy fine....and runs the risk of a custodial sentence..

[quote=mybrainhurts]And what about your buddies doing it on TV.....in heavy traffic where I wouldn't even consider it....?

You might not consider it for a number of reasons...lack of experience (regularly at those speed in varying circumstances), lack of blue lights/sirens, and possibly a lack of legal exemption...

That's where the BiB differ from MoP..whether people agree or not...

As for my opinion...150mph is too fast for many occasions...I wont pass vehicles in lane 2 at double their speed. If vehicles are in lane 1, then my speed will be higher...but if there is a remote chance of car in the lane next to mine, pulling into my path..

After all...I do the job each day that I love..get paid a decent salary for what I do and intend to retire with lots of life left in me...
I'll be 'buggered' if I'm going to risk that for anything..!

What speed differential do you work to? 20 mph?

That, begging your pardon Gary, is a matter of opinion...period!

...and there may be other differing opinions no less valid.

Best wishes all,
Dave.

Well I'm sorry Gary but speaking for myself I'm not content with only being a little naughty. When I'm on motorways or indeed any road I very carefully watch what is going on around me, as of course one should.

I recall an incident a few weeks ago from a trip along the M18. In light to moderate traffic I was in lane 3 travelling at about 90-95 mph and catching up with another car in lane 3. The traffic was quite widely spaced so the young lady in front of me moved over into one of the gaps in lane 2. This left her catching up the next car in lane 2, so as soon as she started heading for lane 2 I increased speed to about 110 and went past fairly quickly, so that she could return to lane 3 unhindered. After that I slowed down again to about 95.

As far as I am concerned we both knew what the plan was, it was carried out properly, and it was perfectly safe for all concerned.

Best wishes all,
Dave.

Y'know Street, I remember you telling me that you could get a true 159MPH out of your S70.
I take it you weren't going round Silverstone at the time??!!

About that...perhaps between 20mph and 40mph...Depending on certain factors...ie: the car that i'm passing, what's in the distance (ie: is that car likely to move into my lane..etc)..
I try to not leave things to chance...

I agree.

However, there's a difference between reaching 3 figures to complete something like you've described and reaching 3 figures and remaining at that speed for mile after mile after mile.

But not for other people maybe? People are excel at different things despite their profession. I did read in the paper a while ago about some WPC who "was scared about driving on the motorway in the dark"

Sheeeesh...

just a copy from a post which died a death earlier -

SNIP>
If drivers cause an accident and its down to excess speed for the conditions/dangerous driving then the book should get thrown at them - be they the police or public.(although I would like the police to have some form immunity/extra leeway if on a call and a similar leeway to firearms officers etc but thats another discussion)

If a person is driving in excess of a speed limit but safely then there should be no penalty. Penalties should be for dangerous/careless driving not speeding. - the trouble is that it comes down to a subject view and would only work with proper education and continued training and re-testing.

I drive regulary in excess of the speed limit but safely for the conditions/stopping distances. (normal provisions about 30 and 40 zones) equally I get re-tested every 3 yrs.

Doesnt make me immune from having a crash - accident do happen, but Im sure I wont get done for dangerous or careless driving <snip

Thank you for your support Gary, and yes I think there is a difference. As we all know conditions are constantly changing, and must be constantly re-evaluated and the speed and other factors adjusted accordingly.

If the conditions continue to be suitable for 110 mph I still do not see the problem, apart from the risk of switching off and becoming complacent.

Perhaps that is the major danger with sustained high speed - maintaining the level of concentration - as Stirling Moss said all those years ago. He was talking about racing drivers of course, but the same principle applies.

Best wishes all,
Dave.

Hi Street.
Last year I was behind an artic doing around 40 on my 'blade. So I overtook the lorry , and by the time I was past it I was doing 110. I then throttled back down to around 85. If you saw this would you give me a tug / and/or nick me?
Incidentally, there was a BiB Volvo parked in a layby and they either didnt see me or wern't bothered, because they didnt give chase. Must admit though, I think I must have left a brown trail behind me for a mile or two after
