Avon ZZR vs ZZS - longevity.
Discussion
Having ordered some new Apollo wheels (13x6 & 13x8), I need to choose tyres.
I have not seen either tyre in the flesh.
Is there more tread profile on the ZZS tyres? Would they be expected to last longer?
Is there going to be any noticeable difference in traction between the two on the road?
They will only be used on road, and I'm not concerned at all about wet weather performance (I never use the car if there is any chance of rain). The ZZR tread pattern does look 'cooler'

I run the ZZR's and they are fantastic track tyre but complete over kill for the road. The reality is you will never safely get them up to their "sticky" working temperature on the road. They are also completely useless in even mildly damp conditions.
If you are running the your car on the road only I would definitely recommend the ZZS tyres over them, or a set of CR500's if you can still get hold of them.

12 months wow! How many miles are you doing a year?
Not sure of the exact figure, but definitely under 2000 miles on the current cr500's (15"). Are you running the correct compound? Are they wearing unevenly? Are you doing doughnuts 😀?
I live in an area with plenty of winding tight roads going up and down hills and mountains with plenty of hairpins.
The rear end can get a bit 'lively' at times, but certainly no doughnuts.
The fronts are wearing a bit unevenly (worn on the inside more than the outside). I think I have too much camber for my purposes.
When I get the new wheels on, the car is going in for a full setup inc. corner weighting. This might help a little.

In the U.S.A., most tires sold here must be assigned a "Uniform Tire Quality Grade" (UTQG) number for tread life, among other things. Avon CR500 is rated at 20. Toyo R888 is rated at 100. While these numbers are not strictly scientific in the calculation method, they do serve well enough as a general guide. My 7 has been on the R888s for the last three years, on about 15,000 miles, and just now need replacing. As far as dry grip per dollar (or pound), I believe the Toyo would be hard to beat. IMHO. Leaving cost out of it, for just grip/feel and overall performance, I don't think one could go wrong with any of the choices listed here so far.
edit -- After further thought, maybe I should have replaced them closer to the 14,500 mile mark, as they have started to go off just a bit in grip lately.

Yes understand they last for ages in the US of A, there are no bends in the roads on that continent. edit -- After further thought, maybe I should have replaced them closer to the 14,500 mile mark, as they have started to go off just a bit in grip lately.

I have been using zzrs for a few years. Love them. Excellent on track. Hard work on the road as you can't get them hot enough and they need care in very wet conditions. They usually last 6-8 track days per set including driving to/from the circuit. In mileage terms 2000-3000 or so. Not very long, but worth it.
I now have a spare set of wheels which I will be putting zzs on for road or wet driving. Can't comment or compare vs cr500s yet.

I've been told that the ZZS and ZZR are the same compound, but thanks to the ZZRs pattern, they last longer on track due to less movement in the tread blocks. Actual lap times would be very similar if not the same, but the ZZR would be able to do lap after lap while the ZZS will eventually overheat.
I'd imagine on the road you'd be looking at very similar wear between them both. I am surprised you've worn your CR500 out so quickly, I've done 3 trackdays at Llandow on mine (which is very hard on tyres) and one at Pembrey (in 30+ degree heat), lots of road miles and still have lots of tread left.

Hopefully some other members will come along and comment shortly but that doesn't sound right to me at all. I have friends who have run CR500 for around 10000miles and multiple track days.
Are you running the correct compound? Are they wearing unevenly? Are you doing doughnuts ???
I had nearly 9,000 out of mine but changed them due to age and small cracks appearing now have the ZZS's Are you running the correct compound? Are they wearing unevenly? Are you doing doughnuts ???
Wow! I couldn't imagine getting more than 2 years from mine (last set only lasted 1 year).
Either I am driving a lot harder than most (unlikely, esp. people doing track days), or I have a suspension geometry setup issue. I know I am running quite a lot of camber (for the road), for example.
I'll see how things are after the change to 13" wheels and a flat floor setup.
I think I might go for the ZZS tyres.
