I'm going to have to replace the Yokohamas on my crossflow fairly soon. Can anyone suggest a suitable replacement for 13" wheels, dry road use only?

Yoko? Are you on 48s, A539s or something else?
How hardcore do you want to go?

R888R is a tyre of choice and much better than the 48s (IMO) because they have a softer sidewall and rounder shoulder so aren't as fidgety.

My only advice would be: don't be tempted to go for ZZR's. I did (despite advice not to) and they're just not the best for the road. There's just no way to get them up to temp and I find them to be less sticky than my old CR500's on the road (at least after the first season).
On track, they are a completely different story.

Next time I will try ZZS's.

Current tyres are A-021R's which were on the car when I bought it, but as they're no longer road legal I want something comparable. I live in a rural area with lots of empty, twisty roads, hence good quick drives without excessive speed, and I've found the Yoko's ideally suited to this, so I'm looking for something soft and grippy for dry use only.

As has been said, if you want ultimate dry road grip, Toyo R888R....and they are tolerant of rain too..

Are there different versions of the 888? I thought there was one with an R and one without, could be wrong though? Which is the one to go for? Do they come in different compounds?

I’m tempted to try something else rather than the ZZS I have on the car at the moment. I tracked the car on Monday (very warm day) and the tyres were overheating after about 6/7 laps. I found myself wishing I had ZZRs on the car but I accept they are no good for the road and I only have one set of wheels currently so...

It sounds like the 888 is better on a dry track and passable still on the road so I’m keen to give them a shot.

Eugene7, who might be along with his opinion, adores his R888Rs...

As The Banker (accountant) says... R888Rs are amazing.
The thread he linked to says is all!
Far better than they have any right to be, even in the extreme wet!

Tom,

The R888R replace the R888.
I believe they come in two compounds - SS which is soft and GG which is medium. GG is the one to go for on the road.

Cheers
SS

Thanks for that. I will source the GG compound.

They must be fairly old then, as they where discontinued years ago? What is the date on them, I expect anything new would be miles better.

I run the Yoko A539 as its on the right MSA list for autotesting, and a good tyre, as well as I expect a close replacement for the A021R
The A048 is the road legal semi-slick version, on I believe a slightly firmer carcass. However you pay the price for that.

The Toyo R888 was a 'road legal semi-slick' on a more road carcass, I believe, which helped the price and when it was wet as I understand it.
Now replaced with the R888r which appears to be equally popular.

The A539 is a normal road car tyre, the 048 is the semi slick trackday / race tyre, the 021 sits in the middle somewhere- it is much softer and grippier than the A539 but can't put up with the punishment the 048 can, hence the 021 is best used on the road or as a racing wet.

Is that really the best place to get them? DT never struck me as being cheap or particularly competitive with most things.

No idea! Undoubtedly one place’s full price will be less than someone else’s discounted price...

SBend...are your Yoko,s 185x70x13? If they are and you want to remain with same profile then you will be limited for choice, however the Uniroyal Rain Expert 3 seems to be the 70 profile tyre of choice for the road.
