If wouldn’t have a problem buying an ex academy car. I did it and didn’t regret it one bit! They are built to be constantly hammered around a track and you will probably find that ex race cars have been very well maintained. I would try and find one that’s had the cosmetics sorted and if possible, one with the 310r upgrade as this makes a big difference! A car like this would be perfect. https://www.pistonheads.com/classifieds/used-cars/...

Many cars emerge unscathed from the Academy and some don’t. You want to know whether there is filler in the bodywork, whether the rear wing fixings have pulled through, and whether the chassis has been repaired / long fronted. Caterhams crash and repair well.

If I were spending as much as £25k on a Caterham for road / trackdays I’d try and get an older higher spec car- a Duratec, a superlight, or a BEC or something. The Academy spec is pretty basic and they are numerous but somehow this never seems to depress prices enough.

This is my car - as above its a great way into a newer car at a lower price point. I've spent a lot to get it into this state and mechanically everything has been gone through and refreshed and replaced in the last 12months. I've moved house and lost my garage and its pushed me to look at selling to avoid renting/storing at friends - otherwise I wouldnt be letting it go after investing so heavily!

I'd happily talk you through some of the pro's/con's I've discovered with it, feel free to get in touch.

Caterham race cars are generally looked after to such a high standard during their life on track that I don't think there is a real reason for concern. People drive them hard on the road and annually service them vs race cars being inspected after every session/race weekend. Cosmetically they tend to look a little worse for wear, which is why I've had some paintwork updated.
