buying first caterham - advice greatly appreciated
Discussion
Guys
Sorry to drag this thread on, am really close to getting my self into a superlight (the car mentioned above).
Looking for a specialist to just cast an eye over it for me before parting with the folding. Does anyone know of any specialists as close to Cardiff as poss? or are Millwoods my best bet?
Thanks in advance
Jon

I see someone has posted a cross link to Blatchat for you - even though I guess you're not a member, you can still view the topic...

Hi,
Just picked up on this thread from the Blatchat side. With so many cars out there the choice is bewildering but as usual it comes down to personal preference and also what you intend to do with the car and how long you are thinking of keeping it.
I think the best advice is to always buy standard cars initially until you understand a bit more of the market you are joining. Standard though does include any/all the Caterham options as this ensures a) CC will always buy it back if you are desperate and b) the next buyer will also be very confident buying a "set" package.
At the 12k level I would buy a decent roadsports or supersport car or a VX engined car (not likely to be an HPC car). If you are looking to use the car mainly on the road, the 5 speed box is a decent box to have even on the K series car. If you are after a trackday or sprint car, then a 6 speed box is more desireable. Other expensive bits to look for in a used 7 are dry sump, LSD, big brakes and wide track. Each one of these will relieve you of many hundreds if fitted retrospectively.
As an aside (and I have no personal interest whatsoever!) I know of an immaculate supersports car that is within this price range that might be for sale. Its a one owner car who is not using the car very much at all and seriously thinking of selling it.
