M14, Option 8 ¦ 4 x 34.6mm (36.28cm2) pistons, 10mm disc

Should be a straight swap for the Girling Type 14 anchors?

They look meatier than the ultralites, but still should be ~2KG lighter per side, and allow to retain the original sized discs and standard brake pedal/master cylinder.

Anybody done this? Thoughts?

I had Hi Spec calipers and grooved discs on my Fury9R and the brakes were brilliant.

Im thinking of upgrading my 7's brakes and have been doing a bit of surfing....

I saw a post saying the HiSpec 7 caliper didnt have enough meat in the body and would flex and over heat - I have no idea if this is true of course....

Ive seen a fair few folk fit either JWM or Cat 4 pots, but I suspect would be over kill for my road biased useage.

I am planning on fitting an AP master cylinder and some proper pads very soon....

I woould "like" to ditch the huge heavy single pot calipers, but dont know what to replace them with, along woth the fact that I like to use grooved discs.....

I think I read similar - the hispec 'caterham' caliper is from their 'ultralite' series @ less than 1KG; some folks say they are fine, and they probably are but I was thinking of their billet 4 model which looks more substantial.

I did think that looking at the pic....

Have you seen the JWM stuff?

looks like an interesting option. Not sure I need the bigger vented discs though for my usage.

Gave up trying to deal with hispec this time round. They were friendly but hard to get a clear answer from; after several weeks of emails and calls i got a partial diagram of the UL4, not the billet4 i was interested. I think they are too busy to deal with retail clients effectively.

Anyway, once i priced up a hispec UL4 260 upgrade with discs, pads and hoses, the price wasnt too far off the caterham ap kit, so the AP kit is in the post. I figure it will probably fit without too much hassle, its factory proven and has some resale value, so for the 200GBP price diff, worth it to me... but would be great if hispec could be a bit faster in responding or id have surely bought them.

Had exactly the same customer experience - impossible to get them to respond at least you got a partial diagram. Saw them at Autosport International - my question to them is why bother if you're not going to respond to customer queries ?

There's a nipple at the top too. They put two so you can also mount the caliper to the rear 🙂

for the record, AP big-brake upgrade was not quite so simple (or cheap) but nearly there...

the caterham AP lug mounted caliper didn't come with shims in the box, and according to the instructions, the caliper should clear the discs by 1mm per side. My calipers were offset 0.5mm on the inner sides, so had to find appropriate shims, which I found to be common with the 7/16" shims used in the austin healey brakes.

That done, the standard M/C brake pedal movement was too far for my liking, so the AP Racing master cylinder went in. Fronts locked up without the rears doing much at all... so then per the caterham parts catalogue, uprated rear pads to M1144 pads, and while they need to bed-in, it doesn't feel like its standing on the fronts anymore.

Now getting a PX-side front lock-up at the limit, so will need swap the tyres around and if that doesn't solve it, may need to corner balance it.

I will say, it's not grabby at all, and very progressive on the tyres I've got on, looking forward to next track day.

I've had HiSpec on Eugene for years. Fitted some 20 years ago.

Picture taken just before fitting.

I fitted with vented discs, which was probably unnecessary, but they work very, very well.
These HiSpec's were chosen as they have dust covers, and with the amount of road miles I do that was a key consideration.
