Decided to come back to Caterhams....I have had a 1700 Supersprint sold it early 90s, then I had a Vauxhall 2L...sold when I got married. Would like to get one again, but am at a loss what to choose. Will be just a fun car but want no less power/weight then the Vauxhall 2L. Will not do trackdays but will put a few thousand miles/year. I use to take my previous caterhams to mid-france. Price point £20K.

Thoughts? What to buy and where to buy?

Think it will only be an SLR at that price or an R300...

R300 sounds ideal. 160bhp, 6 speed box - would be as quick if not quicker than your old Vauxhall.

Genuine HPC or not? Injection or carb? cycles or clams?

£12k to £15k (latter if it's genuine HPC)

Check it really is - chassis number also stamped on the pedal box, under the cover....7th digit should be an "H"

What colour is it? cycle wings or clamshell wings? widetrack, 16 inch wheels?...lsd?

I know you want a Caterham, but I have a possible alternative... and i hope the Caterham fans won't push me out of this forum for saying it hehe

Round the corner from you is a place called Chester Sportscars www.chestersportscars.co.uk who build Tigers, which are Lotus 7 replicas, similar-ish to the Caterham, but cheaper. For 20K you could have them build a brand new top-spec car, with a new Duratec engine in it. The guys there are very helpful and will answer any of your questions.

Ok i'm done now thumbup

Only 2 paragraphs too late smile

Debate done to death in various fora, but they are not the same. Horses for corses etc, but I wouldn't be chucking 20k at a Tiger.

Very true, but I don't think there is anywhere nearby with much knowledge on Caterhams, if that is an issue, whereas there lots of Tiger owners nearby to help out with any problems....

I'm willing to bet if you do get the HPC you'll always wonder what the SLR/R400 would be like .....

... so just get the SLR. thumbup

Don't go over to the dark side, buy a HPC you know it makes sense not least because you'll save lots of money which can be put towards some serious upgradeitis.

High Performance Course.

Catherham made some cars they call HPC's, originally you had to attend a HPC driving course before they would sell you one.

The first HPC's were BD's the later ones were 2L VX, all running on Weber's (Although not sure if the injection model was also sold as a HPC)

Get yourself a copy of Chris Rees's book The Magnificent Seven, this book fairly accuratly charts all the Caterham models.
