I'm considering buying a 2001 supersport chassis but want to fit a newer engine, either a duratec, zetec or maybe just the K series, is it a simple swap, does the chassis need altering? What about gearbox and diffs, ideally I want to fit a 6speed rather than the ford 5 speed?

Also, does anyone have any details for the caterham club in s wales, can't remember where they are or how to find them?

Where can i check the chassis no to check what i'm buying?

http://www.lotussevenclub.com/WhatsOn/AreaMeetings... will cater for all your South Wales needs I would imagine.

Slightly confused as to what you mean in the question, is it a Supersprint or Supersport (1600 K series) chassis ? If the former then it will be a live axle chassis, and a real pain to convert to DeDion. Going down the Zetec/Duratec route is well trodden, but you will need to to think about that axle, a beefy Duratec is going to lunch an Ital pretty quickly, so worth considering a fairly easy conversion to the "English" live axle.

To be honest Techtalk on Blatchat is going to be worth every penny (and more!) you pay for the membership in helping you do a conversion like this.

Thanks for the reply, you might have guesses that I am new to Caterhams! Been on blatchat and will register.

The car is a 2001 supersprint, originally with a Ford X flow but it is De Dion not live axle so i'm a tad confused, i'm being told that it's a simple case of changing the engine mounts and thus a straight swap?

Hey, the first rule of Caterham identification is "assume nothing" smile So have fallen into that trap ! Although a Dedion Xflow is a rare beast I would imagine.

The chassis number (should start SDK ...) is on the top rail beside the pedal box.

I used to have an LA Supersprint, and the Zetec option looked fairly simple (this was pre=Duratec - went the BEC route which has not turned out to be that easy !).

Raceline do mounting kits etc and know a huge amount http://www.raceline.co.uk/

Also worth speaking to Ammo @ Raceco http://www.raceco.com/ as they do a nice line in Zetec and Duratecs.

The thing worth noting about the Duratec is that the exhaust is on the other side to the Xflow / Zetec. So would need a re-skin.

All of which exhausts my knowledge of the subject smile

Noger et al,

My 7 is a '93 Supersprint De Dion. I know of quite a few around so I don't think X/flow De Dions are that rare.

I wonder what the percentage of Dedion to LA Supersprints is ? Just had a quick flick through Chris Rees' book, and it doesn't offer much insight.
