I've just fitted a new scuttle to my car and following the fitment of the new part, I noticed that there is a slight clunk when turning the steering wheel. It's as if the whole column is jumping about 2mm or so (back towards the driver). (I've refitted the 2 bolts that hold the support bracket for the steering column to the scuttle by the way.)

Any ideas/suggestions?

Make sure you have not fitted the clamp to high up the column. It could be touching the 2 bolts going through the scuttle.

"The clamp"? What's that then?! I left the whole steering column assembly in place, and only removed the scuttle and dash.

Thanks

Fergus

What i think he's saying is the two bolts used to fix the column outer to the scuttle may be fouling on the Steering clamp. This clamp is just in front of the scuttle on the steering column, it clamps the two parts of the column together and is black/ gold in colour

its probably play in the crash joint thingy - follow the steering rod down through the scuttle and just behind the pedal box is a clamp - this often develops play as you describe - hold the clamp and move the stering wheel.

There is also a grub screw inside the clamp that has a pointed end - some file this down to a flat to get a better fit , but this can comprimise the clamps "collapse" properties when you have a head on crash - guess there is only one way to find out if it still works biggrin

When moving the column it's possible to dislodge the bush that holds everything central. Wiggle the steering and see if the colum moves around more than normal.
