AVB10s are my favourite caterham tyre, shame they are no more.
ACB10s still readily available from Avon... I bought a fresh set for my Superlight before heading up to Glenshee - its all I every had on the car since I built it in 1997 - as it should be

This is possibly a daft question, but in what way do you find them an improvement on other tyres?

I’ve always found them an intriguing tyre, but I’ve never driven a Caterham fitted with ACB10s.

I think they were standard fitment on the original K series Superlight (& Superlight R perhaps?) before being replaced by the CR500. In the past I’ve read comments where people have said they have a ‘special’ feel to them, but I’m not entirely sure what that means. I think their light weight may be a factor, perhaps because they’re a cross ply tyre?

I tried ACBs on my Fury and it was a total disaster .

Car was twitchy and nervous everywhere.

Swapped to AO48s and the difference was night and day better .

Oh dear! Not the best experience then?! eek

I’ve always had a soft spot for the Fisher Fury, they’re a very pretty car. I remember following an enthusiastically driven Fury through Telford late at night many years ago in my first Seven. thumbup

To try to answer the why do they feel special is that I think it's because they are crossplies and quite grippy. They grip, but have super easy break away, so even a ham fisted driver like me can get great slides with huge slip angles.

They do tend to be a bit tramline-y. That's helped in my experience by getting the camber right. They need to be stood up compared to radials. They have specific DD ears to get that right at the rear.

Thanks for the explanation Bert, that’s very helpful.

My ZZS are getting a bit worn & I was wondering whether to try something different. The characteristics of the ACB10s sound ideal from your description (tramlining aside!), but it’s a pity that set up changes would be required.

After struggling with the balance of my car, I had it properly set up by DPR earlier in the year & I’d be reluctant to change the set up. It feels very sweet at the moment.

I thought that they had lost their road legal status and were just FF tyres these days? Do they have the right markings for road legal tyres?

According to Avon’s website -

“E-Marked and List 1B Tyre. Suitable fitment for lightweight competiton vehicles. Manufactured in the UK.”

Thanks, thought I'd looked there, but clearly didn't see! I better let the thread get back to pictures!

I said I would leave the thread to the pictures, but couldn't resist one last thought (which I did a bit of research on). Technically ACB10 sports are only road legal on cars made/registered before October 1990. However they are E marked so will pass an MoT and it would take a very knowledgeable person to know they weren't legal on more recent vehicles.

And yes, plentiful supply of soft tissue on the left of the garage pic and a sneaky 1600 k-series block on the right biggrin

Good point, that's in another garage Andy! Car has stayed in the garage whilst I put it back together. Just waiting to get my fuel tank back from the welders. Other priorities such as a double podium at Mallory have got in the way somewhat.

Found a few old pictures of my years of 7 ownership.

Freshly built K series group C race car testing at Mallory Park 1992. Think it was the 2nd or 3rd K series ever built.

Part of the winning team of the 1993 Birkett Relay at Snetterton in my Vauxhall race car.

Some classics in the collecting area for the Birkett.

Our current 7, an ex academy car that I hope to race with my son next year.
