That looks really nice smile

Sorry I can't help with your questions, but I have to say I think it would be a shame to convert it to cycle wings.
The S4 Seven looks great with the integrated long wings, and they will keep you a lot drier and stop the stone chips smile

Hi Knut,

- I think you have found your forum. There are a lot of enthusiastic S4 owners here to assist you with any question. I can send you some photos of cycle wing conversions - maybe you might rethink your plan when you have seen them. But anyway when you do the conversion (which is not a difficult job) keep everything in that way, that you can go backwards to restore the old design at a later stage. If you email me your chassis number I can confirm what S4 you have (hajo@lotus-seven-series-4.de) feel also free to send me your technical questions...

Best luck with your great looking new "toy"

Welcome to the S4 Clanthumbup your car looks very nice, keep us informed on your rebuild progress.
I agree with you about your X flows optimistic 130BHP, IMO you'll be lucky if it has a real 100BHP.
Why did you decide to buy an S4? It's not the desired option for most 7 lovers.
There's plenty of knowledgable S4 owners on this forum so I'm sure you'll get plenty of good advice.
Have fun with your car

Hi all, and thanks for the quick responses!
Based on the feedback I will start a project thread here later. Please contribute with comments, feedback and critique. Its the only way to get better smile

As for the cycle wings: i will definetly keep the spare parts so i can convert it back at a later date. I just think the cycle wings look better....

Why I bought an S4? Well the price was unbeatable! I paid equivalent to an unfinished locost project, besides these cars are hard to come by. I actually wasn't looking for another car, having a Porsche 944 turbo and an MG Midget FIA as my toy cars. But this offer was just too good smile Also the lack(!) of any signs of rust was appealing. The car has spent all its life in a ventilated, dehydrated garage.

Unfortunately it have not been driven for 7 years, so I will lightly restore it over the winter.

I will get some pics out later.

Hi Knut,

- it is not serious or better: possible to make any comments from outside about your engine spec. and the possible power figures.
In the case it is a stock 1600 only equipped with the beautiful twin Webers there might be around 100 HP. But twin Webers only make sense with some headwork and a suitable camshaft. And if you take the + 100 ccm of the so called "Supersprint" version you will get up to honest 135 easily -- All are looking same from outside. So the only way to find out the truth is to remove the cyl.-head and to inspect the "internal secrets" (or best to remove the engine and to mate it to a dyno).

Hi Folks,

I know the standard ride height for the S4 is 6 1/2" (I assume floor to ground)can anyone tell me what the clearence under the sump and flywheel / bell housing is at this height?

I'm looking to make up a set of engine mounts and want to make sure the engine is sitting at the right height before I do.

Many thanks

Hi "Mistron",

- it is not the best way to find out the engine position in the described way.
The set-up of the dampers, spring rates as well as different tire sizes will give varying heights. What you need is the measurement of the bottom bell-housing to underside chassis rails at that (theoretical) line. If you agree, I can take the measurement for you.

Cheers, Hajo

Under Sump clearance is the most important IMO especially if you drive the car quickly on bumpy roads, try for 100mm but 80mm works fine on mine on Welsh 'B' roads with only the occasional scrape on the tarmac.

Hi Hajo, yes, I supose what I really need is the amount the sump hangs below the bottom of the lower chassis tubes. if you could take a measure for me, that'd be great.

I'm also missing the steering rack mounts, so if anyone could take a photo and give me the critical dimensions, or even a wee sketck, that'd be brilliant, as I can get some machined up easy enough

Hi Mistron-Al,

- the exact measurement is 3,85 cm (Underside chassis rails to bellhousing).

As the steering rack is Ford Escort "I" you only need to take theese Ford clamps which will fit to the chassis mount for the rack. At Fleabay you will find aluminium aftermarket items for that which will also fit well.
You will not find any steering column mounts as there are no such elements in the clever design of the series 4.
The column is mounted directly to the integated dashboard moulding with a Triumph Spitfire bracket.

Cheers, Hajo

Hi Hajo, many thanks.

I had assumed that the rack was Herald / spitfire rather than Ford. that'll save a bit of head scratching later on!

Many thanks,

Al

Hi there,

- would someone please take some minutes to check the distances between the front grill elements and the distances between the nose to the lower and the same for the upper and the nose? This would be great....

Cheers, Hajo

Top - 1.1/8" [30mm approx]
Bottom - 1.5/8" [40mm approx]
all other grill slats equally spaced.
Hope this helps

hello everyone, great to see a lotus 7S4 specific topic going on!
This is my old man's original, he's also got the allegedly rare hardtop, I quite like 7S4 's with cycle wings as they make the car look more aggressive and modern.

I don't mean to be rude, but cycle wings on the S4 (I love S4s BTW - Mike Ebery's Yellow and Green one is great!) make it look like a Dutton eek
