Hello,
I need some help please, Ive just purchased a 1.9 CDTi Vivaro van which needs a new engine due to the turbo seal going and the engine running on its own oil. I have been told it is the F9K Engine series that I need, but I have also been told that some had different engines for different BHP etc. Mine is a CDTi with a 5 speed gearbox. is this engine right? Is there a difference between the 5speeds engine and the 6speeds engine?

Also what will I need to have programmed to get the new engine to run? I know on some cars its just the injectors that are programmed, can I just put the injectors out of the old engine into the new engine and it will run? or is it more complicated than that?
Any help greatly appreciated!!

Is the engine definetly gone?? have seen the turbo seal failure on many of these engines in differant vehicles (the later turbos were modified to prevent this happening) but as yet have not had to replace an engine as they normally survive.

One thing to make sure though is that the intercooler & all induction hoses are completly free of oil before you put it back together i normally replace the intercooler to be safe.

it depends on the year.

The early ones had a gutless DTi spec which was the 5 speed.

They then introduced the slightly less gutless CDTi which was a 6 speed.

Same as the renault trafic & nissan.

Im sure some form of ecu flashing may be required at the very minimum.

Well I'm not sure as I havent picked it up yet but the bloke told me the turbo went and it revved right up so he grabbed his daughter and just ran and left it running so im assuming the only way it stopped was run out of oil and seized or blew to pieces lol, I'll have a look when I get it, it could be salvageable! I just assumed that it would be knackered but if thats the case there could be hope!
Thanks!

Seen them like this & the engines survived best thing to do is disconnect the induction pipes from the manifold put some oil in it & fire it up should be able to tell if its knackered then smile

Good news biggrin make sure you buy the modified type (changed seal design) & the intake pipes & intercooler are completly clean or renewed smile

I think it's dead frown put the new turbo on and started it, run like a bag of ste, knocking, plumes of White smoke and revved up again! Took the pipes off, full of oil again. Started it without the induction pipes and it runs but knocking and smoke still and the oil was coming out of the induction piping so it's still drawing in oil. Noticed though when I picked it up that the dipstick was snapped so could be overfilled, drained the oil, nearly 8 litres!!!! That's without what it's run on and spat out the exhaust! Put 4 litres back in but it's still running on oil so where do I go now? I'm thinking rings from the pressure in the sump but how would it get into the induction pipes? Looks like its gone through the crankcase breather into the turbo and wasn't the turbo after all! What else can I look for? The head and sump is gonna have to come off to check everything now for the knocking.

Have you cleaned the intercooler out properly?? i have drained litres of oil from them after a turbo failure so could be oil before drawn through there also it will smoke for a while as the oil will already be in the exhaust & will take a (long) while to burn off & stop smoking.

If it was overfilled to that level then the breathers & induction system will be full off oil & will need to be completly cleaned out before you right the engine off smile

If it is the worse it will be more economical to find a good 2nd hand engine there are plenty about smile

Yeah took the Intercooler and piping off and washed them thouroughly and when I started it it filled it again so I'm running it without the Intercooler pipes now and there's still oil coming from the disconnected hoses, the smoke isn't showing any signs of clearing and the knocking is getting worse. Im going to take the head off for a look because I think it might have blown the rings upwards because of the pressure and the knocking is a piece of a ring on the top of a piston? Haven't got it all off yet but will keep posting

Hi, how did you get on with this engine. I have a 2006 1.9 cdti vivaro which has been scrapped due to an accident. All that needs replacing is the bumper and the crash bar and it will be good to go. As it has not been serviced for 6 yrs, has loss of power I thought I would take the pay out from the insurance company to put a refurbished engine in. So, if you put a new engine in, where did you purchase it from.

Regards Mutley

Oh, I am new to the forum so hello all.

I would have thought, being nearly 8 years on, it’s been scrapped.

Actually it’s still going strong! New turbo, cleaned the hoses, changed the oil and she’s still running now, I sold it about 3-4 years ago and it’s still local I pass it all the time. Best van I ever had should never have sold it.
