MPV's should be quick "enough", our Galaxy is a way better car than the Zafira's we tried, its a package where the GSI is a powerful engine in a stiffly sprung Zafira, its about as far from the role of the base car as possible and to be honest the Zafira isnt that big, Galaxy or S-Max is the way to go, get the 2.0 tdci or higher, plus a remap and you have a good car that will move well enough and handle better than the Zafira, well it woll corner as fast as you dare in an MPV but retain some ride comfort.

Why not buy a cheap scooby for hooning

actually makes a hell of a difference to the acceleration.
Is your car a mark 1 pre 2005 Zafira GSI 2.0 petrol turbo then?

I have a Zafira 1.8 so can't comment on GSi performance, although the Zafira is a great very usable car, 7 seater or load lugger.

I looked at these, before concluding an MPV will never be a drivers car (and a tall Vauxhall isn't the best place to start for one of those either) so I will just get a cheap MPV that does the job well, so bought a diesel Picasso.

Theres something that looks a bit desperate to me about a sporty MPV. It's like "please, I'm still cool! Honest!" It's just trying a bit too hard for my liking.

If I wanted 7 seats and was going to regularly use them, I'd get something in the next size up anyway. I saw the fifth gear crash test.....was enough to put me off!

Bringing this topic back from the dead.

As these cars are a little bit older now, how are they faring? What do you need to look out for nowadays when buying? Just thinking about one as they offer 7 seats and have a bit of go if needed.

We used to use Zafira's as Ambulance Fast Response cars, albeit in the 1.9 diesel SRI Spec. A lot of people complained about the seats, though I found them fine, big blind spot to from A pillar, but that seems to be the case with most cars of its size. Nasty habit of spinning on roundabouts/in the wet/on ice, but thats when driven hard with a lot of weight in the back.

Mechanically, it seemed to be the standard Vauxhall fair, it was either fine or terrible with no discernible marking to show which was which. Electrical problems, gear box problems, rattly trim, then you'd get in the next one and it would be lush with 140k on it.

My advice is a little skewed as obviously we'd be running cars 24/7 and driving them hard. Had a few going up in flames when left idling at jobs as well.

In the same situation as you, I went for a Touran, a remap and some decent shocks/springs.

Really? No one else has anything to say for this lately?

Hmm... a Touran. Are they better cars? Not sure you can pick one up for the same price, although I’ll admit to not having looked.

I'm biased of course, but I'd say an S-Max 2.5T is better in every way (except fuel consumption).

Lurktastic I know, and completely random topic for a first post but...

Another alternative - Nissan Elgrand. Import only but same engine as a 350z, 8 seats and some luxury.

Just don't mention the fuel economy.

I think that would be my choice too given the option.

I had a zafira as a rental car this earlier this year and did about 2000 miles in it - great design in terms of space and comfort but a Lousy, lousy, lousy drivetrain and behind the wheel experience - quality poor too - felt utterly shagged out after 12,000miles with some nasty flat spots on the engine - GSI might be a different animal but personally if you can stomach the premium price and running costs over the zafira then I'd go for an s-max 2.5t - great engine, very well thought out car - bonus of the zafira is they are cheap - call me a car snob but to me zafiras smack of shell suits, asda, Jeremy Kyle and crap finance deals from car supermarkets

I considered one a few years ago but what put me off was the people I saw driving them - they were the usual bellend types normally found in the impreza stuck up your backside on an A road.

You know the type - Fat bird with a tribal tattoo above here arse, flabby baps and smoking a fag - sat in the passenger seat. Skinny chav driver with one arm at 12 o'clock on the steering wheel, shod in chavvy clothes and wearing some sort of hat. Two kids in the rear (one called kayden or Leighton), not wearing seatbelts, giving the V to other road users, shaved heads and farting a lot.

Lol! Definitely not me then but it does put me off somewhat. I only considered these as they're somewhat cheap and get the job done. Can't find anything cheaper that gives the same performance.

True, but that 2003 car has 3 years on the oldest S-Max.
