Stig,

If you go over yourself, I would thoroughly recommend Ron Ward at Campbell Ford. www.saleenperformancedealer.com.
Even if you do not buy from him, he is a great guy and will help as much as he can.
I did eventually use an intermediary but it is a client of ours and I got the car and shipping etc. for just over what I would have paid if I did it myself.
I have a few friends who have shipped stuff over themselves so pm. me if you want some more contacts.

Kev

Thanks Lus1fer. I have a firend in the US so I suppose he could order it in his name and no one would know. Maybe I should ask him to get me quotes now.

Good luck.

I think the boat on the GT500 has probably sailed and the right to buy the first GT500 sold at auction for $600,000. The dealers seem to be looking at $20000 over sticker as a starter, one sold on ebay (convertible) for $62k and there are prices of $90,000 to $120,000 at dealers floating about. Just dion't get sucked in by the hype. That's one heavy mutha of a car at over 4000lbs and it needs that 500bhp to go Vette hunting.

I know of two people who had orders on them that had them cancelled by the dealer when they realised what a massive premium they could charge!

Don't see the point personally - alot of dough for a Shelby badge! I'm going to go for the Saleen 281 Extreme.

At even $20k over sticker it's no longer a bargain IMHO. May as well buy a Z06 then

The Saleen looks way better anyway. I love the Saleen. The Shelby is very contrived although I'd buy one of their Hertz racers in a heartbeat.

I'm seriously thinking about at Shelby GT500. I hired a Mustang whilst on holiday in the states last month and was impressed. This would be my first US import, so any advice would be appreciated,

Kev - try the following link;

www.import-car.info/index.shtml

which should cover your main queries. Not sure which Mustang you hired, but it is likely to be the V6 which is a very different beast to either the Shelby or even a stock V8 GT. Best of luck - and don't worry about the whole LHD issue as it is seriously overegged; not a problem at all.

Kev,

For my Saleen Mustang, I used Ron Ward. I got a good deal on an ex Demo and used some contacts to go and check the car over before I wired the money.
Have a look at his site. www.saleenperformancedealer.com
He works out of Campbell Ford dealership and has a good name as they are also one of the biggest Saleen dealers in the US.
There have been a few recalls but I can fill you in on those.

Hopefully, mine should arrive in the next week so will post some pictures once I've detailed it.

BTW Saleen were in the UK a fortnight ago looking for a South and North dealership to take on the Saleen name, so there could be hope of warranties and servicing in the UK.
For importers, I would recommend www.51stateautos.com. Charles is a very knowledgable guy and very helpful. Tell him I sent you. Even if you don't use him, he will give you lots of choices.

Hope this helps.Heres a pic of mine on Rons forecourt.

FWIW, if you're after value for money, I would look at the Steeda Screaming Q. This retails for around $37000 and comes with 90mm throttle body, cold air kit, shorty headers, underdrive pulleys, charge motion plates, 350bhp, 3.73 rear gears, Steeda shifter, Steeda sport springs, Tokico D-spec shocks and struts, Steeda sway bars, control arm relocation kit, camber adjusters, bumpsteer kit, billet LCA's, adjustable Panhard bar, heavy duty PHB brace, G-Trac brace, rear shock tower brace, strut brace, Ultralite 18" wheels, Nitto tires, Stop Tech front brakes/Steeda rears, rear wing, front splitter, functional cowl hood, hood pins, black bonnet, black rear panel, dress-up stuff and revised yellow/black two-tone and bolstered upholstery. Seems quite a bargain. Steeda are based at Pompano Beach in Florida.

MM&FF tested the Screaming Yellow Q round a track (They also do them in red). Having timed a 2005 Saleen supercharged Mustang round the 1.3 mile track in 1:25.03, the Steeda with less hp did it in 1:25.16 (Stock GT was 1:26.98). Only criticisms were the handling was a little biased towards oversteer and a little twitchy under braking.

Personally I don't like the tall rear wing but there's no doubt that you'd have the only one in the UK as they're not as well known as Saleen and Roush though every bit as capable. Not a car for introverts though!

I now note that they've announced a version with over 500hp - the Q525:
