I would have bought that very one had I sold the Z06 but was still umming and aaring over a Cadillac CTS-V. At the time, I thought the Saleen was too expensive at $37000 but after a bit of research, realised that a top spec Mustang GT was selling for over $30000. I aslo didn't realise that those HID headlamps alone are over $1000 worth of kit. I think the dealer was a little spooked by the news of the 450bhp GT500 which Ford had announced at the time although the salesman denied that such a car even existed and that there were no more SVT cars. So he was either lying or just there to sell cars.

Yeah what I meant was they're about $20 and I'll give you £25 for them. LOL. One thing you need to know about American cars is that they don't have very good headlamps so the HID's are a good idea. I can't believe someone took them off for the looks. If you look at the Saleen and Roush above, I can't see there's much difference.

Most Mustangs will be happy with simple fluid changes as per the service schedule as most things in the engine are non-maintenance. If you get faults, places like Litchfield or Mildenhall can diagnose and fix problems. Personally, I would change the oil and filter very 5000 miles using a good quality oil like Mobil 1, change the brake fluid every 2 years and you can generally do all the maintenance yourself.

Agree with this, and I recently got my 5k oil change done at the American Carriage Company in Barnes. At £150, it was not cheap, so may need to try and teach myself how to do it!! Any tips welcome

Wayne - I have a stock 2000 GT Mustang, owned from new, with 85k on it now and going well. I have flowmaster mufflers fitted which may liberate a few more bhp, but have heard much about cold air intake systems. Can you give me a quick idea as to why this benefits engine efficiency and whether you have something similar fitted (does it improve horsepower and fuel efficiency to boot?).

THe oil change is a piece of p*ss although it's harder these days as you may have to unbolt the plastic undertray. You just run the engine till it's hot, unbolt the drain plug, drain the oil (take the filler cap off to allow the oil to drain better). Replcae the sump plug and oil filler cap. Get an oil filter wrench from Halfords, unspin the old filter, replace with a new one, smearing the lip with fresh oil to seal and don't overtighten (available from US automotive and the like so better to get a few in), refill with oil. Cost should be about a tenner or less for the filter and you'll probably need two 4 litre tubs of Mobil 1 which are are £40 or less depending on offers but you'll have plenty left over so next time you'll only need one.

Cold air intakes work by sucking colder air. Colder air is denser and so there's more oxygen which is what you want. That's why winter air is so much better than stuffy summer air. The computer compares the oxygen content and feeds in the appropriate amount of fuel so colder air should mean more fuel is injected and more oxygen so more power. In cases where the cold air intake is increased to a large degree, the computer may benefit from being retuned. Some companies actually include a reprogramme with their product but they're obviously expensive as you get the tuner.

I don't have a cold air kit but the stock (05) Stang feeds from a box on the right hand side. Mine has an open freeflow cone filter to increase the airflow (but the supercharger involves a complete retune of the computer anyway). Some kits have a shield on the intake to stop the filter sucking in too much hot air from the engine bay as this doesn't help the power. Mine has a supercharger which uses a compressor (like a turbo but driven off the engine) to compress more air into the engine. More air = more oxygen = more fuel = more power. The same cold air principle applies except that the compressor can actually heat the air through compressing it (like a bicycle pump gets hot). That is why on mine and on high power superchargers, the air leaves the compressor and feeds through a cooler to make it cold again and then into the intake. The cooler can be an air to air cooler or an air to water cooler.
