Evening all. Don't normally visit this part of PH but I have a question. Mrs Londoner has decided for some reason that she rather fancies having a 1968 Mustang convertible. Now far be it from me to deter her in this quest as I know that I'll probably get to drive it more than she does, so assuming that such services exist, can anyone recommend anyone in the US who can be relied upon to source a car, inspect it and sort out shipping to the UK? I'm assuming that there will be relatively few 68 cars in the UK, so is this the best way to go?

Cheers

Hi, you could post a wanted ad in the For Sale/Wanted section on the owners club forum:

www.mocgb.net

You could even put a wanted ad in the club mag ... email the editor at roundup@ntlworld.com

That's for Uk cars obviously ...

For cars in the States, I'd look to possibly buy from a dealer unless you want to take the ebay gamble. I bought off ebay unseen from a dealer and the car was fantastic - exactly as described.

You can get independent inspection services over there too.

Another good idea is to trawl the owner's club websites - they sometimes list cars for sale but be prepared, the US being the size it is means there are plenty in every State, sometimes more than one in a particular county ... just refine your Google searchs appropriately. There may be a link from the Mustang Club of America that lists all the affiliated clubs ...

What's your budget - could make a big difference to what you can expect and therefore where it's best to look ...

One on ebay here ... clicky

OK, it's a 67 but the body is the same and the steering wheel is less poncy IMO!

Mike,

Many thanks for the input, I'll have a look into those suggestions. As to budget, I haven't yet got to grips with this. I found an American cars magazine in Smiths a couple of weeks ago that listed a couple of cars in the classified ads at around the £17000ish mark, but I have no feeling yet as to whether this sort of level is right or wrong. In any event, I think I would have to look for a car that does not need work due to the lack of space/lack of time interface, so I guess that puts me at the upper end of prices.

Does it have to be a 67/68? There's a lovely white one for sale here .. but it's a '66

www blazedesign.com/66

And it's up for 16k, which is a good price I think for this car. Looks to be very solid, loved and in good overall nick. The great beauty of these cars is that the running costs are tiny, low insurance (mine is £109), no road tax etc, and they don't lose any money ... !

And they're great to burble along at 40/50mph in!

Classic American or American Car World (both availabile in WHSmiths, so probably one of the ones you have) normally have listings in the back. I'm sure I've seen more than a few Mustang specialists advertised. Even if they don't specifically source cars, they will, no doubt know if any for sale.

Let us know how you get on.

Have to play this one carefully. If the lady says she wants a '68, well, who am I to argue?

Will dig further and report back with progress, queries and hopefully in due course piccies.
