Oh well, first step towards a new Mustang were taken today. I put in a serious enquirey to a Florida dealership about a new GT as a California Special for delivery in January.
I'm hoping to spend a bit of time in the States next year and I've got to do some travelling, so I might as well buy a car. I could buy a second hand car, but I've decided that if i don't buy what i really want - i never will. And I fell in love with the 05'V6 hire car I had earlier this year, so I might as well get a Mustang rather than something boring
Does anyone know what the build times are like at the moment?

I've never heard of anyone having a US vehicle built to spec. You just walk into the dealers and come out with a car. If they don't have the spec you want, you just go to the next dealer.
i'm pretty sure you can order a vehicle. there was a guy in ford giving customers on a ford forum somewhere their build and shipping dates (until he was closed down by ford). apparently you could get more from this guy than your dealer.
Yes, you certainly can. It's just not as common, although high-spec German vehicles are often ordered in the US. I guess it's a combination of impatience and low vehicle pricing. It's also why you tend to get packages of options from US manufacturers rather than lots of individual options as in Europe.
I was in California last week, there were some great close-out sales on '06 models, as the '07s come in this time of year. No-one here would probably know the difference, so no loss of snob value, but typical offers were a couple of thousand dollars factory rebate plus a couple of thousand from the dealer - more if you took out factory credit, up to $7k off a $40k SUV.
