Any tips on how to make gold and improve magicka quickly?
Gold, collecting and selling. I raided Fort Greymour (just west of Whiterun) killed all the bandits (also increases your skills) and then collected up everything and sold it, took more than one trip obviously. It will respawn after 10 days (so you can time advance if you want) then attack and clear it again. Or another smaller camp if you wish, cherry pick the most expensive things first. Sell armour and weapons to both at Warmaidens and the elf in the Drunken Huntsman, other things to the merchants and shops around the well in Whiterun.Magic - training, for destruction magic I used the court wizard in Windhelm to begin with until he can teach no more, then moved to the next one. Buy a carriage ride to Windhelm just in case you have problems getting there (depending on level). For others see here - https://elderscrolls.fandom.com/wiki/Trainer_(Skyr...
My advice, and apologies if this comes across as patronising as it really isn't meant to be - but stop worrying about not knowing what you're doing, accept that you will struggle in fights (find alternative ways to progress whenever you can), and enjoy the gentle pace. Explore, a lot. Look at the scenery. Do a few quests, if you like, but definitely don't rush through the main storylines. Take the time to peel back the environment and actually feel like you're part of real, living world. That's the real joy of Skyrim.
You will need, conservatively, at least 100 hours in the game before you can be confident in combat against more or less anything. There are a lot of enemies to come at and particularly at the start of the game, most of them will kill you before you can blink. But that's OK. Just go and do something else - there's no shortage of options.

Im following the main storyline at the moment im just so lost on so much, like why do i need somewhere to sleep, why would i learn smithing to make tools when i can buy them, how do i enchant tools, how do i stop magicka draining when an enemy nicks it all off me etc etc lol im so lost, still enjoying it, just frustrating how the makers dont tell you anything during the game and u have to keep googling etc. You will need, conservatively, at least 100 hours in the game before you can be confident in combat against more or less anything. Like is there anything i should be doing to help my combat skills, im only playing on apprentice level but struggle against some enemies.
I have a elfish dagger with a iron shield as a backup when i run out of magika, but i usually rely on dual cast firebolts and flames to take down my opponent, however my opponent keeps draining my magika somehow i think as i run out very quick even wearing archmages robes and ring and chains that give me extra magika.
Im playing as the cat character.
You will struggle against most enemies early on. You don't mention a follower, a follower is a warrior that will fight by your side. It is very handy to have a follower if you are playing a mage as they can be very tanky, i.e. they will charge forward and engage the enemy and you can hang back taking pot shots. you don't want to be involved in hand to hand combat if you are wearing robes and not armour. You can get Uthgerd_the_Unbroken easily/cheaply early on

My best advice (and it's really dumb) is use the Cart / Taxi service! I only really discovered them in my last play through. In previous games I've always schlepped over to new cities which, whilst cool for discovery, completely ruined the pace of missions for me!
Couldn't believe I'd been so dumb when I realised they could be used to travel to un-visited cities!

My last play through I played a no armour mage focusing on conjuration and illusion. The early game was a bit of a slog, but once I was higher level using calm and frenzy on a room full of people then dropping a couple of dremora or elementals in amongst them was endless fun.
thanks for the tips i think i need to boost my illusion skills ive been focusing purely on destruction. One thing i want to sort is how do i protect my magika from being drained without casting a spell to protect myself.
If you don't have it Bethesda are giving TES3 Morrowind away for free via the Bethesda.net launcher until March 31st, code on this page - https://elderscrolls.bethesda.net/en/tes25
Ps, the Bethesda launcher is currently buggered. - https://bethesda.net/en/status

You can't stop it getting drained but you can equip items that speed up your regen so it's not rally an issue. It's worth levelling enchanting for mage characters as well. Again really easy to cheese level as just breaking down enchanted items will give you xp.
Also collect any filled soul gems you find and enchant whatever loot you're planning to sell before you sell it. A wee xp bump and it increases the value of the loot.
