We have been looking at these machines from HP.

https://store.hp.com/UKStore/Merch/Product.aspx?id...

My wife used to work for HP so still knows senior people there, so might be able to swing a good deal on some ex demo units.

I know it’s easy to add ram and SSD.

But I think as aways the limiting factor is Video ram and processing which of course can’t be upgraded on a laptop.

I wonder if it will be as optimised as HL2 was? Even a fairly normal PC could run it well. Compared to some other games it was very friendly to graphics cards.

But perhaps VR pushes things a bit further?

We have been looking at building a new pc for work stuff for a while.

Perhaps we are better off with a tower unit that allows easier upgrades, and we can use the few spare 1TB SSD units we have too.

I’ve built towers in the past, it was easier then, there wasn’t a lot of choice, but now, oh my gosh, there must be a million options of just a Case and mother board.

On the plus side it does look like a very powerful unit can be built for less than a grand, so that at least makes the overall cost not so bad!

I think I’m settled on a Ryzen processor, seems like the best option. They do bundles of mother boards and cpu with 32gb of ram for about £300 seems a good place to start.

The other funny thing I hadn’t realised was the operating space needed, and that you have to stand up to play as well.

Watched a video of a reviewer playing at valve studios in Seattle I think , they played for 4 hours and looked absolutely knackered!

The emphasis in that image should be minimum. I have approx 2.5m x 3.5m and that isn't really enough for some games. This is something that is often mixed and really puts a block on for a lot of UK households especially. We don't have the floorspace.

Good to hear Valve are looking at options for Alyx.

I think so, it's Half Life turned up to 11 - https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=m0pbkebm2nM

It's the same Black Mesa levels upgraded but the much hated Xen levels are completely different looks-wise and make it a better game.

I played and finished Black Mesa when it was a free mod. Apart from adding the missing Xen levels, any idea if this payware release is any/much better than the free version? If it is still worth getting, can we use saves from the free version with this?

Black Mesa looks amazing but I think my Half-life ship sailed a long time ago. I'm not willing to fall back in love with the series if Valve insist the only way I can play any new games is by prancing around with a box on my head. Probably best left in the past where they abandoned it.

I'm replaying it again thanks to Black Mesa and it's really an incredible game. The Black Mesa update is excellent but it's lovely polish and tweaks on one of the best gaming experiences out there. I'm looking forward to going back through Blue/Opfor and 2 again now smile

You sound quite the Luddite. I'm surprised you play video games at all.

HL:A is making me seriously consider uprooting my PC from its comfortable spot in the shelf to take to a friend's place as he has an Oculus Quest.

That, and buy another 4GB of ram...
