Half Life 3 confirmed at Gamescom!

HL3 seems to be turning into a "Duke Nukem forever" scenario.
At least with Duke there was vapourware and vague promises of a release. Half Life 3 isn't even at that stage.I just don't know why these games get ignored. Fallout 4 is a minor case compared to the HL3. I genuinely believe part of the problem is not knowing how to top HL2. They dithered so much, the ship sailed and now they probably won't bother to finish the story. Instead, they released a few safe Portal games. Flex their design muscles a bit, but don't make something that could be considered to be not as good as HL2.

It's funny, because developers are always trying to figure out what sells and what is going to be a successful game. And yet, gamers are crying out for these titles and we're just ignored.
Nail on head. I am mid thirties and have been completely head over heels addicted to gaming since Turtles and Duck Hunt on the NES. As a kid I used to save up / cajole my parents / beg steal and borrow my way through title after title not really caring for quality. I was an early convert to Sony and was nigh on first in line first the PS2 and PS3 eager for every upgraded gaming experience.
It pisses me off now that I am (relatively speaking) cash rich and (not so relatively speaking) time poor and have absolutely nothing to move on to. I know this has been talked about ad nauseum before; but this thread is my tipping point. I frequent this gaming sub forum really only to get an early warning that something has come down the line that will finally grab me. I swear to God my heart skipped a beat when the Fallout 4 and this very thread started, only to be left out in the bloody cold again. I have absolutely no interest in MMORPGs or online shooters being tormented by a 12 year old from Boise, Idaho who is apparently on good terms with my Mum. I want a link to my past (Duck Tales remastered helped) or an indepth well thought out story to immerse myself in and forget about what I need to do tomorrow. Can the house that finally gets their act together also release a complete game that'd be great if even pay the difference upfront no questions asked.
Bethesda, Valve 2K et al I am calling on you to remember the generation of parent botherers that enabled you to keep going from the first iteration of your game to this point today. For the love of all that is right and holy even give us a sign that something worthwhile is coming.
TL;DR?
For the love of God stop it with these threads. It's doing my nut.

I dont think HL3 is ever going to happen personally. As you said, way too much expectation now.
Thing about Valve is there isnt a focus on exactly what is coming next, people can work on whatever the hell they feel like. I guess no one feels like working on HL3 or it would have happened.

And if its going to be anything like Duke Nukem Forever it should stay unreleased

Half life 2 is still my favourite shooter ever. It blew my mind when it came out and is still good for a re-visit now and then.

I am also a massive half life fan, and I play half life 2 over and over again, and never get bored with it.
Realistically though I don't think we are ver going to see Half Life 3, which is a major shame, but valve are making so much money from other games, they just don't need to do it.
I even connected to gabe Newell recently on Twitter, and he responded to one of my tweets, basically saying it was never going to come.
So I remain gutted and without a purpose in life, despite not being a spotty angst ridden teenager, and rapidly approaching retirement, I can still idly dream of what might have been!
Have you done the update?

Well worth it, and it nice to hear the commentary about the game design.

Just wondering if anyone else had seen the update that HL3 is being shelved in favour of a HL film starring Edward Norton as Gordon Freeman?
Multiple sources are out there but all seem to be quoting a single thread so not sure just how credible this is - but at least its SOME sort of news!

Funny you should choose Amazon as an example of that when they have made some really outstanding Amazon-only content like The Man in the High Castle. Next instalments of Half-Life and Portal being made by JJ Abrams. I didn't know he could code.

Am I the only person on the planet who thought Half Life 2 was just OK?
I mean, yeah it was 'good' but the original was mind blowing. The sequel simply ran with the foundation laid out in HL. Which is fine, but when declaring HL2 'the greatest game ever' I just think that the first one deserves it more.
Plenty of other games around at the time of HL2 were doing similar things.

Yeah, I'm in agreement.
One thing that struck me at the time was its stability with Win98. From memory I only crashed out of the game on one occasion, throughout the entire play through. Unheard of at the time for me.
Has HL3 ever actually been confirmed? I'm fairly sure all I've ever read or heard was speculation?

I think it was the physics which set it apart? The physics on HL2 was out of this world IMO. I remember watching this tech demo and being in total utter shock at how amazing it was. Perhaps other games were doing it but I hadnt come across them;I mean, yeah it was 'good' but the original was mind blowing. The sequel simply ran with the foundation laid out in HL. You may be right - I never played the HL1 first person game but instead was introduced the the multiplayer version and it's many spinoffs.I mean, yeah it was 'good' but the original was mind blowing. I did enjoy the first person story of HL2 immensely - basically the first FPS game I'd eve played the single player version of. It was 18+ hours of gameplay and well worth the purchase price.
Physics in HL2 were much improved, much more rag-doll-y and all the better for it.
Did anyone take in http://clearskiesthemovie.com/
It's basically made up story using a combination of Eve (online) and HL2 graphics content. Quite a good blend if you knew both games..
Orange Box with hl2 is on Xbox1 back compatibility for those wanting to relive it.
some one mentioned about developers trying to figure out what we want when we are shouting. Millennials are the fking problem. The past is bad ok. How many of us loved the Bad Company series from BF? It was by far the best there was, yet they say they wont develop another as they cannot put their finger on what made BC so good. Twunts the lot of em
