Potentially interesting enhancements to exploration coming up. Unusually (!) they all sound like positive changes, particularly like the planetary mapping probes as I really, really dislike flying over planets trying to get to an exact coordinate when I don't have the target to lock.

E.D.I.S.O.N, your Planetary landings will never be the same.

Its an API that tells you where the planetary co-ordinates you specify are, gives you a bearing/distance etc. One of the more useful additions to Elite.

Any help/recommended guides for a newbie? I bought this a couple of years ago on the XBox in an attempt to revisit my formative day of Frontier Elite 2, but not had the time to play it since. Tried at the weekend and I couldn't do the advanced training mission! Apparently throttle needs to be in the blue region to turn properly?!

Yes, throttle in the blue region maximises maneuverability. When starting out I'd recommend finding a system in boom state to run data delivery missions from for good profit which doesn't rely on cargo space or combat fitout.

Advanced combat training is notoriously difficult. A lot of people skip it.

Use a utility like EDDB to easily find a nearby system in the Boom economic state.

Play with ship configurations in Coriolis.

My news is literally this evening after 607 hours logged I've discovered my first Earth Like World!woohoo

Picked up again following a long break owing to the house flood and losing my joystick. Bought myself a cheap HOTAS (Thrustmaster T.Flight HOTAS One) and have since been relearning how to fly, been sat on the screen for a while and will attempt VR tonight and see how I do!

Beta testing soon, which you can download and install separately. You will get your profile ported across & sometimes a big wedge of credits to play with anything you do doesn't impact on your game profile so you could use that for testing and getting back into it.

Usually don't want to spoil things so steer clear of betas but I think this might be an opportunity to practice nig ship PVP without ruining my own anyone elses bank balance.

Currently out in Colonia kinda wondering what to do other than head back to the bubble via Sag A*.

Not much out there - http://elitedangerous.hozbase.co.uk/interestingsys... unless you want to head off somewhere else and discover something new.

I went out there for the new engineers and because I hadn't been, six hours on the neutron highway to get there in a moderately stripped 'Conda smokin Then nearly three days real time and a hundred million credits to ship the modules I wanted out banghead

I'll probably stay out here to do some more exploring when chapter four drops but in the meantime I'll try and make some money mining or maybe bounty hunting. Trouble is nothing is ever going to be as efficient a money maker as Robigo busing...

There's always a new gold rush with every patch. Cynical part of me says they put it in in purpose to lure some players back.

Haven't played any of the Beta yet but it's around this time of the year that I get back into it.

Beta has been mostly impressive. New exploration is shaping up as more fun and more profitable.

Mining has a lot of new stuff that was only released Tuesday so not had time to try.

New lighting is looking very nice.

The downers are they've added more complexity to controls which I'm not too thrilled with.

There's now two HUD modes which seems ridiculous as in "analysis" your weapons are disabled. Hopefully just a bug or feature they'll realise is daft.

Really liked the look of the Mamba but it's jump range and cargo is poor. Combat only. Krait Phantom is the answer to a question no-one was asking?

I think I'm doing something wrong. I unlocked access to my first engineer yesterday (the blaster) but thought I'd toddle off any have a go at this weeks community goal missions first. No idea where to look, I drop into a combat zone near the base on the logic that would be where some rescue pods are located, straight into a firefight between a whole load of system vessels(?) - one misplaced shot and I'm getting all sorts of warnings which suggest I'm being shot by engineered weapons, died in about 30 seconds. This is single player only! I guess I need to learn how to pilot without flight assist and spend some more money on my ship (Viper IV). Back to rare trading or road to riches route to Maia I guess.

Did you pick a side first? Top of the UI panel 4, will have choices when you are in a zone.

If Escape pods are what you are after, you will get them from USS's in system not in combat zones.

Ah, is that what that line is for!! No, I just shot something.

Lazadude - thanks, that's very helpful. USS it is, very happy to ignore combat zones! I also see that I can use Open for free this weekend (I don't have Gold) but think I'm going to avoid it as suspect that there will be people looking for PVP in the sector.

Just started playing this on the Xbox, it's slightly harder than when I last played it on the ZX Spectrum...

Am i right in saying you can't revolve your ship on its axis?. I keep having to roll ,back up and jig around just to face 180 degrees.

I've also found out that requesting docking should be done once you're all lined up and happy...it took me 30 mins (3+ attempts) the first time.

Toggle flight assist (whatever control that is on Xbox) flight assist on is normal flight, like an aircraft, flight assist off is move forward spin the ship around on it's axis and you are still flying in the same direction but going backwards or sideways.
