So the Core mining got a nerf latest patch disappointingly. Some developer decisions are unfathomable.
Cr/Hr reduced by about 30% it seems although I've not had time to personally test it.

Busy preparing for Distant Worlds 2 expedition although I'm running late as it launched a few days ago, but I plan to intercept the main group at the centre of the Galaxy for a fun trip out to Beagle point over a few months.

Pretty cool that DW2 organisers got a good luck message from Chris Hadfield.

Just returned from a 2.5k ly exploration trip outside of the bubble, but even as far as 2k out many of the systems are already "discovered" (although not mapped). I'm a bit surprised because according to estimates there are 400 billion stars and only 0.001% or so are discovered across the game so far, but every one I visited has been discovered!.

It is good fun, if a little unnerving looking for fuel at times, and I did it in an Asp explorer so managed to get to almost 100 jumps away from my home base (Neto). I did manage to discover a few systems and have got my name up in the stars now.

I never found anything other than Ice or rocky ice bodies, only one pre discovered and mapped out terraformable and after about 400 LY out of the bubble, there were no more Thargoids. Am I doing something wrong here?.

My next step is to trade up for a better ship with a bigger jump range and fuel tanks, then maybe go out again for a long trip, perhaps 15k - 20k LY.

Good trip for a start but 2.5kLY isn't that far. A 5kLY will unlock Palin the engineer.

20kLY will get you to Colonia or SagA* where 10,000 other commanders are heading now for distant world's 2 expedition.

Thargoids are only around the Pleaidies. Guardian ruins are also great fun to explore and you can unlock some handy gear like FSD booster.

The scavengers can be killed by the weapons on your SRV easily. Thargoid Inceptors are the things to run far far away from though! Have you seen one "refuel" at a barnacle forest, it's quite a sight but random when it might occur.

Darnielle's progress in Maia is the only station I know of that sells Meta Alloys although stock can be hit and miss.

Anyone advise me as to my next step please?.

I've been reading up and still can't decide if a Python is worth the money, or if it's a logical next step after an AspX?. I'm up to about 90mil in the bank so I could afford a python and kit it out, but I'm used to my AspX ( never lost an interdiction in it , playing in solo mind), it's agile and has decent thrust to get me out of trouble, plus I like to explore (I'm currently 3k out from Neto heading out further, hoping to hit 10k) and while the FSD range isn't great, I think it's probably more than a Python could achieve.

Any suggestions as to what to do next?. I have used the Asp in combat a few times for bounty hunting, kitted out with a beam, pulse and the rest multicannons, but prefer to use the Vulture for that.

I mostly use it for exploration and running trade jobs. I'm really enjoying exploration but I guess would prefer something with a better jump range.

Wayoftheflower, how's the distant worlds expedition going?

Maybe go for the Krait mk II?Similar to the Python but more manoeuvrable. Probably my favourite ship

Properly kitted out you can get over 50LY jump range out of an AspX, and you'll struggle to beat that in anything other than a stripped out 'Conda. For exploring really it's hard to get better than a focussed AspX build.

90mil is only just about enough to get a decent build out of one of the mid-range ships but in any case it really depends on what you're wanting to do. I really like the Fer-de-Lance as a combat build; the Python's a bit of a jack-of-all trades and can make a good trader or miner, or if you want to chase money you could do a lot worse than make a decent Orca build and run passenger missions. All of those would however take pretty much all your capital so, personally, I'd run up another hundred million or so before going too mad.

If you still want the jump range with more firepower, cargo and speed have a look at the Krait Phantom.

Example build, you can change/remove some things to extend range if you want to use it for exploration - https://s.orbis.zone/26v-

More of an weaponless PvE explorer 52ly range with double vehicle hangar - https://s.orbis.zone/26w2 5a FSD with max engineering if you have done it on the AspE you can swap it over.

I did hook up with a few people stationed at Colonia to make the trip to intercept the DW2 convoy part way, we made good progress through Kashyapa and ended up at Polo Harbour which we thought would be about the closest station to the DW2 route. That was about four weeks ago and after exploring around the station a bit and gathering more materials I got bored and headed UP. Now I find myself about 2500LY above the galactic plane with very few navigable stars and an increasing paranoia about al the exploration data I've accumulated including about 4 new ELWs.

This week finds the DW2 heading to Polo Harbour and me unable to play Ebiggrin for a fortnight so I think that'll realign the schedules and I can actually formally hook out with the Distant Worlds 2 fleet heading for SagA*

On the way from Polo Harbour I visit the Dryau Awesomes which is a nuts system with the black hole, white dwarf and gas giant in very close orbit, makes for some amazing views.

As for your next ship, as mentioned already the AspX is a great explorer only recently marginally outdone by the Krait Phantom. Python is almost too good a choice for jack of all trades, it really can do everything pretty well and it the best hauler easily. I really enjoyed core mining in the AspX, have you tried that?

Hi,
Thanks for the suggestions guys, once I return from my current trip out I'll look into trading some more and getting a few more mil behind me before splashing out.

I haven't engineered the FSD on the Asp, but even so, stripped out at the moment I'm getting just a smidgen over 30k jump range, depending upon my fuel load. I have got a spare fuel tank (32) as I wasn't enamoured with the fuel range on the standard tank.

Given the useful info here, I think I'll stick with the AspX for the meantime then.

Wayoftheflower, I've not tried the deep core mining, but by coincidence I did a scan on the Gas giant that's close to my adopted home base of Neto, it contains Void opals and low temp diamonds, so I'll have a look at the guide and give it a go on my return. I don't mind travelling the very short hop between there and Neto, even with a high value load, which is one of the things I like about the Aspx, in solo I've yet to be sucessfully interdicted in it.

To be fair, NPCs are so bad at the interdiction mini-game you'd have to be partially paralysed or near death to lose to them.

Frontier API for EDDI is working again in the latest version of EDDI (v3.3.6) if anyone else uses it.

I'm still very much a beginner in "new" Elite, and just been running transport missions for cash. So far there is $1.5M in the bank, which I know is peanuts, but I don't particularly want to abuse game mechanics for big bucks just yet. Anyway, I just bought a Cobra III, and upgraded thrusters, power transfer (both to level C). Any advice on what other upgrade would be worthwhile? I don't intend doing much fighting but I'd like some decent weapons, and would like to do some mining in due course.

If it is relevant, I just got my first engineer mission (Felicity Farseer) so am slowly working my way over there.

Well done on the Cobra purchase, it's such a flexible and capable ship if I were you I'd plan on keeping it forever and ending up with everything A rated except maybe sensors and life support.

A big fuel scoop can make long journeys easier.

A tip, before going to find Farseer, check out her unlock requirements here.

My big worry was that I had bought the wrong ship! Phew. I wrote out all the stats oldschool style on squared paper as I came across new ships, and the Cobra seemed too good to be true; fast, agile, decent capacity. I will definitely be hanging on to it. I added 2 gimbal pulse lasers and 2 gimbal multi-cannons today. Only 1G and 2F, but keeping an eye out for upgrades.

Thanks for the reminder about engineering materials, I had seen that in the past, but totally forgot about it. D'oh. Plenty of time before I get to the engineer though, I'm just sort of doing missions as I go.

Seconded on the Cobra being an excellent all-round ship. The only things I'd add are to be selective on the upgrades - there's no point spending money on weaponry if you're not intending to fight - and go for the best FSD you can, as being able to jump further just makes the galaxy much smaller and easier to navigate.

I would wait until you have loads of materials and an A class FSD before engineering it at Farseer. It's exactly the same amount of materials to upgrade a C as it is an A but it's not really worth the effort to engineer anything that isn't an A grade module (except maybe sensors for lightness).
