I've been exploring way out on the edge the last few months on a fleet carrier but we're on the way back now so I'll probably be back in the bubble and ready for wing adventures in a week or two.

Step 1. Earn enough for a Cobra (generalist) or a Viper (combat)
Step 2. Engineer it to max.
Step 3. Repeat for whatever medium ship takes your fancy.
Step 4. Repeat for large ships
Step 5. Buy a Fleet Carrierlaugh

Been doing the community goal this past week, however....

I've just been showing up to the CZ's and blasting those dirty Imperials in a 'Vette. I didn't know you had to "ally" yourself with the faction at the station first - so my efforts didn't count. Fun though!

I'm currently wandering around on the border of the Elysium shore and Formidine rift just south of the Heart and Soul Nebula. I did a visit to the Bubble Nebula where there are 2 fleet carriers parked, one not accepting ships but the other "Welcome Rest" I think it is called, does, and was handy to repair my DBX which fell foul of a couple of FSD aborts too close to brown dwarf star plus sell the Cartographics I had stored.

Not found any Earth like planets, but a couple of Water worlds and countless Rich metal bodies. Couple of Codex discoveries but I'm enjoying jumping around and seeing what's out there.

My intended route, if possible, is to loop up to the Errant Marches, into the Vulcan Gate, into Temple then head back home to my Station of choice, Neto. I hope to stop off for a coffee at the Fleet Carrier Frontier Sanctuary which is part of the DSSA, on the edge of the Formidine then head on out from there. Currently at Pathfinder 8%, so when I return hopefully I'll be a bit higher!.

I tend to hang out at Neto, currently at Strekalov Gateway. It has a Haz RES nearby for upping my combat count. Thought about getting X rated guns to go Thargoid hunting but it's just too much hassle atm

How long have you been out in the black? I got half way to Colonia and decided exploration isn't for me. Mind you, this was before I did the grind for my Corvette. Now I've got it and fully engineered it, it's been fun blowing things up - but I might venture back out...

I tried that once, and lasted about 4 seconds in combat. Soon realised that combat is not within my skillset! I have an FDL, but even when entering the combat zones or trying the kill missions, I get totally owned within minutes. Best thing I think I can hope for is maybe grinding in medium risk Rez, unless anyone has any pointers as to why my combat skills are so terrible!.

Neto is a nice little station, my Python, ASX, FDL and Hauler are stored there and I use it as a home base, Ising Vision is close enough out of an FSD jump to make life easy, plus close enough from the Rez combat zones o get to if , like me, your canopy is in busted.

I've been heading out for about 3 weeks now, I try and do 30 jumps per session in my stripped out but unengineered DBX, but scan most systems I come across that aren't brown dwarf. There's some epic Gas giants out and about, plus the bubble nebula was pretty but much smaller than I expected. I'd intended to visit Heart and Soul for the Asteroid base there but decided against it and headed onto Formadine, but I'm currently having issues (as of 01:30 this morning) plotting a route to the Carrier located in Syreadiae JX-F c0 - every time it's "route planning failed" so I'm currently trying to "dog leg" my way there. also looking forward to heading up to Vulcan soon.

I've mapped a few Rich metals, plus some Water worlds and found one Ammonia type. There are plenty of fuel stars around here, but part of the Formadine (the area I'm entering) seems to be a bit sparse.

It can get a bit tedious jumping, but I was never a combat kind of guy, I've got Elite trading through Deep core and decided to try and elite my Exploration. My last exploration trip was to some Guardian ruins just outside the bubble more out of curiosity than anything else, which was great until I got there and realised I had no cargo hold, so the relic I had in the Scarab needed to be dropped frown ...

Exploration is OK, it suits me as finding the virgin systems once you're 1.5 - 2k outside the bubble is still fun. Saying that, I'm currently 11k from Neto and still find the odd system that has been explored.

I'm sat on about 1.1Bn at the moment. Started to mine the cash for a Fleet Carrier, then they announced how much they would cost to buy and, more importantly, cost to run, and I lost interest and bought a Krait Mk.2 for combat and... stuff. I'm parked at Jameson Memorial most of the time - my Asp Explorer, T9Heavy and Krait Mk.2 live there anyway. I have 10 engineers unlocked (although not many to level 5) and the furthest out I have been is a smidge over 5,000LY. Bagged quite a few first-finders and naming rights on the way out, which surprised me. Found the route planning tool to be incredibly poor heading out there but quite good at finding the way back. 1 or 2 "locked" areas out there that needed passes for some reason, which was a pain.

I have been doing some of the community goals recently, not for the cash, just for the experience really. I wanted to get my combat rating up to unlock more engineers too, so took the opportunity to engineer my Krait and start to level an NPC fighter pilot from Harmless. I didn't dare start pewpew-ing until I had got my shields and guns engineered a bit. The current community goals have been good for this, and the nice bonus of an interesting missile launcher (that looks somewhat OP) to try at some point.

Some info on my current pair of ships:

Asp Exp: Range (max) 52.2Ly - not got the alien upgrade yet, boost 468m/s. 100T capacity, fast, nimble. No idea how tanky, I just run away really quickly, no weapons. Its kinda like a tuned Ford Transit on steroids. My daily driver.

5A Power plant (Lv1 overcharged)
5A Thrusters (Lv2 dirty)
5A FSD (Lv5 + experimental)
4A Power dist (Lv3 engines - no need for weapons, don't use much shield)
Scarab SRV
(Optional 2x16 corrosion resistant cargo racks)

Krait Mk.2: Range 25.8Ly, quite tanky with current community goal PvE enemies, surprisingly nimble with engineered thrusters. Boosts endlessly at 488m/s, never runs out of power.

3x 3C (large) gimballed multi-point cannon (Eng Lv 2 overcharged + oversized)
2x 2F (medium) gimballed burst laser (Lv3 long range + oversized)
2x Shield booster (Lv2 + super cap)
7A power plant (Lv1 overcharged)
6A thrusters (Lv 3 dirty drive + drag drive)
5A FSD (Lv5 + deep charge)
7A power distributor (Lv4)
5A shields (Lv3 + multiweave)
(Currently with F63 condor fighter bay with "competent" pilot, otherwise >200T loadspace)

(Current status - Trade = Elite, Combat = Novice, Explorer = Pathfinder)

Oh boy, that was a bit of a wall of text, sorry about that!

Nice ships cool

Your Krait's FSD engineering may be able to be improved by switching from deep charge to mass manager.

IIRC deep charge is only really effective on smaller FSDs.

Looking at it quickly in Coriolis though the difference doesn't seem to be huge on a size 5.
https://coriolis.io/

NPC helpers are useful but they do become a drag on your finances after a while. They also slow down your combat rank progression sadly.

Interesting though, nice to see the engineers can get the boost up on the bigger ships, thought my Cobra was good for legging it if I ran out of talent in the HazRez but possibly my new shiny FdL can be engineered up with extra oomph too. It has far more firepower than the trusty Cobra but not as manouvrable atm.
The FdL was my present to me after exploring up to Elite in the Cobra. Currently 27% Dangerous in combat, using a keyboard only which I think is unusual, possibly?

Have been sweeping the Unidentified Signal Sources to pick up less common MATs, Quite useful.

FDL is the goto for PVP so it's going to be your best friend for all things combat.

KB&M is arguably also the best setup for combat due to the better accuracy when using fixed weapons.

I use a controller so just rely on the firepower of a Corvette to grind combat rank against Thargoid scouts. It'll own a Hazrez with the right fitoutntoo.
'Vette just isn't fast enough for solo PVP though.

I've been playing a bit of Star Wars Squadrons and although I'd love Elite to have some of the spectacular set piece battles from SWS on the other hand the flight model and graphic quality of Elite really hold their own against a brand new title.

Elite is down to £5 again, and as of the end of the month will be upgraded to Horizons for free. Tempted to get a 2nd account...

I've kind of given up on getting to the KTL Frontier Sanctuary [J2W-5XF] (Formidine Rift) Syreadiae JX-F c0, I wanted to see Zurara as well while I was there, but there is simply no way my ship can plot a route, even with stage 1 FSD injection

Also, pretty much every system on the edge of the Formidine / Elysian Shore has been discovered, (I'm calling BS on the tiny percentage of the Galaxy being explored lol), which isn't a problem because I know I'm on the right track, but after 4 hours of trying to manually plot a course towards the carrier, I gave up, so I'm now heading back to the edge of the formidine and working my way up to the Errant Marches. I can't work out why they would stick a Carrier in such a hard to get to location.

I had also thought of dog legging up towards EM and back through the denser star field and coming back towards Syreadiae JX-F c0 , but even that's proving impossible. Serves me right for having a noobish vessel I guess. Still, onward I go, taking in a couple of Stellar and Planetary poi's as I go. Still good fun, if a little frustrating.

If you travel somewhere you are more than likely going to take the same route as someone else before you. Usually on a flat plain route, try going off route then you will find unexplored systems. Plus with the long routes you are going to try and get there quickly with maximum jump ranges, or even longer with neutron jumps, missing out systems in between. So you jump 50 or 60 ly, but if you did a 30 you might find something. I have done a few routes and deliberately gone off route up or down and had my name as first discovered on systems and planets.

You could try using the Heisenberg Bridge, your DBX must at least have a low 30 Ly range? You will probably need to go up the galactic arm a little bit once you've crossed the route and then you should be able to make it to the Zurara's system. I did this using a 32 Ly ship when I first visited it.

I'm not too fussed about squeezing ultimate range out of the Krait, as I stick with the Asp Exp for long expeditions. Once I have the thrusters maxed it may well be worth me having a play around at theorycrafting on Coriolis though. I don't mind the slight experience drag with the extra pilot, it isn't too bad when levelling them from the ground up, and I'm not really chasing triple Elite. Getting older, with wonky reactions and eyesight, that bit of extra help is nice to have in a rumble!

I only play keyboard+mouse (all PvE) having always gamed that way. An analogue throttle control might be handy, although I have keys bound for 0% and 75%, and in dogfights I generally throttle back to around the mid optimal point and just boost when I need to chase or evade. For some reason boosted speed seems to generate more agility than normal flight speed.
