Euro Truck Simulator 2

Have used the retarder on some long downhill sections and it seems to work fine. Doesn't slow you down like the brakes but it certainly keeps a check on things.
Also used it on motorway exits where you have to get down to 40 for a curve and prevents me from over braking to below 40 and thus having a struggle on the climb back up to the other on slip. Momentum is everything.
I must not have it set up correctly as the only time I hear it or notice it's effects is when I use the brake. Motorway exits are when I miss it the most for exactly the reason you stated. Also used it on motorway exits where you have to get down to 40 for a curve and prevents me from over braking to below 40 and thus having a struggle on the climb back up to the other on slip. I used to drive an older Volvo with a retarder that had to be manually activated each time with a spring loaded foot switch. Every other truck I have driven, the retarder is activated as soon as you lift off the accelerator pedal.
They work in various ways.
They can be a restriction in the exhaust so the engine has to work hard on the exhaust stroke to pump past the restriction.
Can also operate electro-magnetically using induction on a device mounted on the transmission. Often seen on buses and coaches as quieter in operation than the exhaust versions. Look up TELMA.

Jake brakes (proper name is Jacobs Exhaust Brake) actually alter valve timing to open the exhaust valves to release compression on the piston compression stoke. That is what produces the characteristic machine gun bellowing sound when activated. You can hear it when the driver switches on the master switch.

You can actually drive with the master switch on as there are micro switches on the throttle pedal that prevent operation while the the pedal is pressed.
I can imagine that such a system would be considered "anti-social" so other quieter systems would have to be used. "Jake brake" is often incorrectly used to refer to engine/exhaust brakes which is why I mentioned that you may have heard of them by that name. Sort of like people using "Hoover" to refer to a vacuum cleaner even though it isn't actually made by Hoover.

This game seems very therapeutic and addictive after watching that Swedish guy on youtube - it's actually making me price out a pc gaming system for the first time in my life. I hope the developers try to do some of the upgrades suggested on this thread - it would be so rad or "epic" as some would say.
One question - Are the motorway - street names actually somewhat accurate?

Yes I thought the systems which opened the exhaust valve at the top of the compression stroke had been pretty much removed from use due to noise regs but perhaps I am wrong there.
Still used on heavy plant & aggro vehicles.... Saves the brakes when lugging quarry dross down steep slopes. You do get a lot of drivers that "abuse" it simply because they like the sound. They are also usually the ones that run open exhausts which amplify the sound. I don't know about in the UK (no truck driving experience over here), but in the US Jake Brakes (and it's other variants) are still available on new trucks, but they are nowhere as obnoxious when fitted with a proper silenced exhaust.

My laptop won't run it so I am looking into a suitable PC myself. The game doesn't require massive spec (a £200 Ebay special will run it), but you do go down the road of "may as well get the next higher upgrade". redtwin said:

I'd never heard them on trucks in the UK, but in Australia (where I now live) they seem to be on every truck. There are a lot of US trucks down here though.PiB said:

In regards to the different YouTube lorry drivers I like the following; One question - Are the motorway - street names actually somewhat accurate?

- OfficialNerdCubed (see this video)
That last one is an hour and a half but he is really funny and I do rate it as one of the best Euro Truck Simulator videos on YouTube.

I found OfficialNerdCubed from this thread and searching YouTube for ETS2 videos. Have a look at some of his other stuff too. Very funny!- Keralis,
