New PC racing sim - Assetto Corsa
Discussion
I’ve bought, downloaded and set up the game with the wheel using the settings from Amosmoses and honestly, I think this is the game I’ve been waiting for, I’ve just done a practice lap of the ring in the NA MX5 with all the driver aids off and it was sooo much fun. Thanks again for the heads up, I can see this giving me many hours of fun!
Although I'm surprised there wasn't more choice in cars, only FWD / hot hatches I can see are abarths

Lots of mod cars & tracks available for AC and, I would highly recommend installing content manager - it just makes the process of setting things up so much easier.Although I'm surprised there wasn't more choice in cars, only FWD / hot hatches I can see are abarths

If you like just driving, for me AC is the ultimate sim thanks to the combination of at / over the limit handling (lovely tyre model for slip) and the content available.Although I'm surprised there wasn't more choice in cars, only FWD / hot hatches I can see are abarths

if you do nothing else, look on Race Department for the LA Canyons mod, and look in to the shaders patch which allows night driving with headlights etc. Mind blowing amount of effort still going on in the modding community.
My magic moment with AC was deciding I was going to properly learn the Nurburgring at last, I took the Alfa Junior to the ring, set the track surface to 'old' and spent weeks just balancing that delightful little car around the track. It's a joy to drive.

Thanks for the tip off, I will check it out. I’m glad to hear you can add more to it easily!SturdyHSV said:

I've owned Assetto Corsa since the first Beta was released to NetKar customers (of which I was one), but I've never really raced on it - I just load it up, pick a car and track and drive. It's kept me happy for years just with that.

Yep, if I fancy a drive, I'll fire up AC and choose a car for the Nordschleife and enjoy a spirited drive.
Thanks, very interesting that some people do in fact, just drive around on their own, thought it was just me! I do like to have a race sometimes but its also very nice just to bimble around on your own Also thanks for the recommendation!TameRacingDriver said:

Definitely not just you - I'm a sucker for hotlapping - I love racing my ghost and trying to improve my laptimes! Not sure that qualifies as 'bimbling' though! I play it the same way too, nice to just drive. Its like a digital track day! Live For Speed is good for that too and IMO more natural feeling for hanging big slides, but doesn't have the same variety of cars.
Had a good session trying a few different cars that I hadn't used before. Default setups, and street tyres for the road cars with that option.
Alfa GTV - horrible, understeers like a pig and when the back end eventually does swing around its almost impossible to catch.
Alfa 33 Stradale - incredible wee thing, revs for Africa and sweet balanced handling (thought it can get spat off kerbs pretty sharply)
250 GTO - amusingly throttle-adjustable rear end, runs out of grip and traction pretty quickly when you try to push it harder.
Muira - hustled better than I expected... partly because the lack of brakes means you are trailbraking into corners whether you mean to or not.
R34 GTR - fun, well-sorted and very forgiving.
Boxster S - I expected balanced and well behaved... but no, its a surprise knife-wielding lunatic and probably the loosest car I've tried in AC so far! Even light throttle in anything other than a straight line and you're rapidly opposite-locking your way towards the nearest wall. Quick though.
My favourite AC cars so far (in no particular order)... GT86, Merc 190 DTM, Alfa 33 Stradale.

Why can't it return the wheel to centre at the start of a session like every other game?
I keep ending a session with lock on (sometimes after spinning into the wall yes), starting another session without remembering to straighten it and pulling away smartly into the pit wall...

This isn't exclusive to AC - I do this in PCars 2 all the time, usually after a big 'off' where I've had to let go of the wheel to save my arms getting ripped off (direct drive wheel = 1st world problems!) They can't win, can they.
I'd be happy just to have steering that feels at least moderately like a real one on opposite lock instead of having to fight it all the time!
I'm finding AC weirdly frustrating actually, its better with the different FFB settings but seems to behave differently every time I play.
ETA: And after posting that I went and had another go and thought it was good again!
I think I have figured out now that the semi-slick tyres are far more consistent and progressive than the 'street' tyres - maybe something in their tyre model, but the street tyres seem to suddenly let go or bite with no warning or obvious reason (ie balanced throttle, as little as a quarter turn of opposite lock and suddenly get spat off the outside of a corner).
Or try the old let go of the wheel when going sideways trick, which with a real car will typically self-correct the steering (or more correctly let the car rotate around the front wheels I guess) but in AC it self-overcorrects unless you get the timing perfect to force the wheel against the feedback to straighten it.
The semislicks seem to be more predictable anyway, so maybe I'll stick with those. And the vintage tyres are plenty progressive too.
