New PC racing sim - Assetto Corsa
Discussion
Patch v1.12 is updating on steam for me.
Changelog:
Assetto Corsa v1.12 update available!
Featuring all-new FREE bonus content, including the Audi Sport quattro S1 E2, as well as our home made Highlands track! The perfect track doesn’t exist. That’s why we created one.
AUDI QUATTRO S1 E2
Introduced back in 1984, the Audi Sport quattro S1 E2 revolutionized rallying. Just like the other manufacturers, Audi used the lenient homologation requirements to create a new rally car. All the car maker needed for homologation was a production run of a mere 200 cars.
Blomqvist's spectacular, sideways driving style suited the Sport quattro perfectly. By flicking the tail out, the Swede overcame the natural understeer of the nose-heavy Audi. He won five of the twelve rounds and was crowned the 1984 World Champion. Mikkola and Roehrl also won a round, which was enough to clinch the constructor's trophy.
HIGHLANDS LAYOUTS
The perfect track doesn’t exist.
That’s why we created one.
Highlands - The original layout, 8152 meters long, filled with fast flowing path with curves and several jumps.
Highlands Long - An extension of the original layout, 12191 meters long and has all the characteristics of the original layout. This layout features some slower curves, a fast series of left and right turns, after a passage between rocks and the distinctive 3km long "Cabhag straight"
Highlands Drift - A configuration born to create long powerslides with supercars and hypercars. At 5167 meters long, this layout features long, flat and smooth curves, perfect for holding a constant power slide. The "tower lùb", guards the surroundings at the top of the hill.
Highlands Short - The shortest configuration, only 1714 meters, but based entirely inside the city. Incredibly intense and requires the concentration of a pro.
All four layouts share the same starting positions and pit lane, as well as the first corner and final 2 corners.
FIXES INCLUDE

Thanks Any idea how big the update is? We have very poor internet over satellite, so if it's above a certain size I'll open Steam in offline mode until I'm ready to do the download. It's annoying to have AC locked out for days unplanned!
Just under half a GB this time - includes a new fictional track, new car and updates to about 150+ cars (tyre changes mostly). Will take maybe 45 mins to download for me...

Finally, my first attempt at a mod has been released! It can be downloaded (for free) here: http://www.racedepartment.com/threads/dallara-fx-1...
Not everyone's cup of tea but I'm pretty happy with it. Glad to have it out there, will be focusing on other things now (Transit...). Good fun on the new Highlands tracks too

Does having a wheel make a massive difference in this game? Kids got an xbox for xmas and this was my present to myself on it. Got to the hyper cars on career mode and controlling the power coming out of corners is getting really tricky, never mind the steering sensitivity contributing to controllable over steer becoming uncontrollable. Quite like the game, but my last racing game was F1 2012 and I've not had a wheel since GPL. Single player at the moment.
If it's anything like the PC version, then yes, a good steering wheel is absolutely essential if you want to drive anywhere near the limit properly. I realise that some people might manage on a controller, but they must either have years of practise on one or possess rather freakish thumbs!
Yeah a wheel is very very close to essential in my mind.
Bear in mind though if you do get one, don't get discouraged if your laptimes are slower than your pad times for a while - I found this frustrating to begin with. It just takes some getting used to, even though we can all drive instinctively with a real wheel.
Give it some time and you'll never want to go back.
I remember being a bit worried that I wouldn't like the wheel, so could only justify getting a second-hand one - turns out 2 years later and probably thousands of hours of use, I'm almost willing it to die so I can purchase an upgrade

Does anyone know how accurately they're modelling these cars? Not in terms of the way they look, but in terms of the engineering and the way they drive? In the early days with just a few cars I hoped that they'd be modelling quite a bit, but with so many cars available now I'm beginning to doubt that. I know that Gran Turismo models precious little for each car, which is fair enough as it's only supposed to be an arcade game (and drives like one!), but I was hoping that AC, being a sim, would be a cut above that.
They were properly done in rFactor and considering the amount of time this has taken it's not even been straight ported, they are also including new cars.
But for fun, does anyone remember the brilliant Amiga/ST game Skidmarks?
